Our Family’s Favorite Animated Movie: Coraline

coraline11 Our Familys Favorite Animated Movie: Coraline Our Familys Favorite Animated Movie: CoralineMy son is 8 and 1/2 and is getting to a pretty cool stage in life where he’s still a kid but is starting to realize that there’s all kinds of interesting stuff beyond what is designated for his age group. This is particularly so for animated movies.

As a family we tend to watch as many movies together as we can. Obviously, there are some very R-rated things that are for me and my husband only. But for the most part, if we’re going to go to the effort of going to the movie theater, we like to find something that we can all enjoy. For animated movies, we tend to seek out flicks that are appropriate for younger folks but entertaining enough for the grown ups.

The movie that we agree achieved this the best is Coraline. We saw it in the theater when it came out, which was around the time that the latest 3D technology was picking up speed. Right away, we agreed that Coraline was one of the coolest looking movies we had ever seen. Our Familys Favorite Animated Movie: Coraline

coraline 2 202x3001 Our Familys Favorite Animated Movie: CoralineBut digital bells and whistles aside, the story of Coraline tapped into something in all three of us. We could all relate to being lonely as kids sometimes and being frustrated with life and seeking some stark alternative. As parents, the scenes in which Coraline’s parents are simply too busy to play with or even pay attention to her were harshly familiar. Coraline retreats to a fantasy world ruled by the Other Mother, who is initially everything that Coraline wants in a parent. But as she comes to find out, perfection isn’t always what it seems and she comes to appreciate her parents, flaws and all. And Coraline’s parents, while not aware of the bizarre nature of the lessons that she learns, come to realize that their stress doesn’t affect only them.

One of the main morals in Coraline is to strive for compassion and understanding, especially toward the most important people in your life: your parents and your children. But aside from having rich meaning, Coraline is enthralling (though sometimes pretty scary, so it might not be the best pick for very young kids), cute with its dashes of humor, and the animation is stunning.

    Either “Madagascar” or “The Incredibles”.

Love Coraline! It’s so nice to have an adventure movie with a girl as the hero.

We don’t have kiddos but we do both like WALL-E.

The Incredibles. Even though we know all of the words, it’s still the favorite.

  • http://the-holmes.blogspot.com The Holmes

Wall-E and Up are the favorites around here. Of course, my boys both love Cars, but my dislike for that movie disqualifies it from being a family fave.

Couldn’t agree more. What I adore about Coraline is that it’s a clever, engaging movie with a clever, engaging female protagonist. And my *sons* both clamor to watch it. That’s nothing to sniff at right there. There’s hope for the ladies yet.

Like Gaiman’s book, the film version of Coraline was both beautiful and quite terrifying. At some point we’ll show it to our kids (as we will the Miyazaki films), but at this point I think it’d just scare the bejeezus out of them.

As for our family’s favorites? Tough call, since we’ve got dozens on DVD at this point and they’re all in regular rotation. If we’re talking the family unit as a whole, we’d probably have to go with The Incredibles and The Iron Giant, both of which – above and beyond being wonderful animated films – are great films, period. Brad Bird = genius. Unexpected runner-up: Surf’s Up, which consistently has us all cackling like madmen.

We love Coraline, too… The Iron Giant is one of the all-time faves of everyone in the house, but pretty much all the Pixar movies have been in heavy rotation at one time or another. Also, notable for it’s female heroine, Spirited Away. And The Emperer’s New Groove always comes back into play. ALWAYS. And we all quote it regularly, from the big one winking and pointing one finger while saying “riiiiiiiiight” just like Kronk, to the littlest one participating in a vigorous imitation of “Uh-huh! Nuh-uh! Uh-Huh! Nu-huh!”

“No likey!” “Buh-bye.” “WHY do we even HAVE that lever??!”

Totoro probably gets our collective vote.

I will say though… Full disclosure, I saw Despicable Me in an advanced showing w/my 7-year-old daughter, and that’ll be up there for us. Daughter is already asking if it’s out on DVD :)

My almost 5 year old daughter LOVES Coraline. She hums the spooky music and plays out elaborate Coraline-esque scenarios with her Groovy Girls. None of her friends have been allowed to see it and that makes her feel about ten feet tall. I have yet to get tired of watching Coraline…yet ;)

I’ve always loved scary movies since I was a kid. I grew up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Nightmare Before Christmas’. So Coraline was a natural fav for me. My mom died when I was 9 and my dad had to do everything for me and my brother. He not perfect, none of us are, but I came to apprecieate him for his positives and shortcomeings a long time ago. Coraline is a good lesson to those spoiled kids who still haven’t figured out to apprecieate what they have. It’s between Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas as our favs as animated films in my family, no doubt.

Oh I haven’t seen that one! I shall definitely have to add it to the queue :)

We watched Coraline last night on Blu-ray, and I hated it. I thought it looked nice, but as a fan of the book (not so much the egotistical author), it just left a lot to be desired. And Whybie was just completely unnecessary.

The first thing my husband, who has not read the book, said when the movied ended? “I hope the book is better.”
