This Flashback Friday is brought to you by Sparklecorn and “Groove is in the Heart,” which turned 20 this week.
I got pretty much all my dance moves from the video for “Groove is in the Heart,” so I guess all my best dance moves are also 20 years old. Sad when you realize you’re basically the 90s version of Disco Stu.
1990 was an important year for me in terms of music, though I didn’t know it at the time. The Pixies released Bossanova, Depeche Mode released Violator, and in Seattle, two bands were months away from exploding onto the music scene and finding an indelible spot in my musical autobiography. Meanwhile, I was pretty much exclusively listening to New Kids on the Block, Tiffany, Mariah Carey, and Paula Abdul, not yet aware that I was about to throw away that bubblegum shit forever.
But I will tell you this: when “Groove is in the Heart” premiered on MTV, I paid attention. The deee-vine Lady Miss Kier danced like she was teleported into that video from the set of Laugh In, and I danced along in front of my television screen.
And then I guess I decided I had all the fly moves I would ever need in life, shut off the television, and have been dancing thusly ever since.
