Flashback Friday – Deelite

This Flashback Friday is brought to you by Sparklecorn  and “Groove is in the Heart,” which turned 20 this week.

I got pretty much all my dance moves from the video for “Groove is in the Heart,” so I guess all my best dance moves are also 20 years old. Sad when you realize you’re basically the 90s version of Disco Stu.

1990 was an important year for me in terms of music, though I didn’t know it at the time. The Pixies released Bossanova, Depeche Mode released Violator, and in Seattle, two bands were months away from exploding onto the music scene and finding an indelible spot in my musical autobiography. Meanwhile, I was pretty much exclusively listening to New Kids on the Block, Tiffany, Mariah Carey, and Paula Abdul, not yet aware that I was about to throw away that bubblegum shit forever.

But I will tell you this: when “Groove is in the Heart” premiered on MTV, I paid attention. The deee-vine Lady Miss Kier danced like she was teleported into that video from the set of Laugh In, and I danced along in front of my television screen.

And then I guess I decided I had all the fly moves I would ever need in life, shut off the television, and have been dancing thusly ever since.

Um, this song is number 7 on my all time top ten list. Can I get an amen?

Their album was probably the best thing about my last two years of undergrad.

Deeeeee-gorgeous! When the first few notes of this began a la Sparklecorn, ’twas all to the dance floor. Thank you for thusly honoring one of the best dance tunes (with the best dance moves) ever.

(My aged knees still are a wee bit sore from the dancefest!)

Whenever I hear this song I always think of an old Saturday Night Live sketch with Christian Slater.

WHAT? My theme song is 20 years old? Man, I really am old.

But at least 90′s fashion is back on, so I can be old-fashioned and totally up-to-date at the same time ;-)

@TJ – Amen! This was one of the first songs I downloaded onto my iPod.
