Hi, I’m Sarah Lena, and I have a problem. I’m a bit obsessed with the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.
I never got Harry Potter. I know, I know.. now you’re going to start calling me names that I don’t understand, like “Oh, Sarah, you’re such a muggle” or “Quit being such a quidditch!” or something weird. That’s fine. Cause I have Hunger Games.
I picked up the first book in the trilogy, The Hunger Games, over Mother’s Day weekend after I heard a bit of chatter on Twitter about it. Within the first 30 pages, I was completely engrossed in the story and rooting for the heroine, Katniss Everdeen. My Mother’s Day gift then became the request that NO ONE TALK TO ME UNTIL I FINISHED THIS BOOK.
Although the series is based in Young Adult fiction, it’s written so well that I fell in love with it. The premise of the trilogy is that the country of Panem, separated into 12 Districts, is controlled by the Capitol. Each District has their own specialty; Katniss comes from District 12, the District responsible for coal mining. Most Districts are in ruin; poor, hungry, and oppressed at the hands of the Capitol. Each year, two children from each District are randomly selected to compete in The Hunger Games. Twenty-four children, “tributes” ranging from age 6 to 18, are thrown into a manufactured arena and there can only be one winner. They must fight to the death.
I KNOW, RIGHT? And it is AWESOME.
The second book, Catching Fire, is another book that I inhaled and couldn’t put down. And when I did put it down, the first thing I did was preorder the third book, Mockingjay. This final installation was released YESTERDAY.. I got mine last night and am halfway through, so forgive me if I seem DISTRACTED AS I WRITE THIS .. and we’re going to get you involved in the Capitol hype!
Mockingjay picks up to tell the story of the Capitol’s revenge against Katniss. There is rebellion and unrest in Panem, and the Capitol only holds one person responsible .. 17 year old Katniss. It’s as engrossing and fast-moving as the other two books, and can I just say? .. it’s AWESOME to have such a strong, independent, and competent feminine hero! Katniss ain’t your average Bella, folks.
And to prove it to you: we’re giving away a Mockingjay Bundle to TWO readers!
Your Mockingjay Bundle will include:
- 1 copy of Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
- 1 8GB iPod Touch engraved with the Mockingjay logo (!!!)
I literally SQUEEEEED when I heard about this. You can not only finish the amazing trilogy and find out what happens to our Katniss, but you can conduct secret Rebellion business on a fancy new iPod Touch! The Capitol would HATE that! DOWN WITH THE CAPITOL! DAMN THE MAN!
