Pitchfork’s Top 50 Music Videos of the 90s: What Do We Think?

smashing pumpkins 278x300 Pitchfork’s Top 50 Music Videos of the 90s: What Do We Think? As I mentioned about a month ago, my calculations have indicated that the 1990s are now officially “20 years ago.” As befits a decade that has reached such a milestone, definitive lists of its most noteworthy cultural and political events will now be published for the express purpose of being dissected and angrily dismissed by at least half of their readers. Who better to release such a divisive list than Pitchfork?

I don’t regularly read Pitchfork, as the whole site reminds me of the irritating college radio DJs and indie-rock aficionados that I used to spend so much time arguing with. I thought they took their music too seriously and they felt that because they regularly were one of two attendees to shows that took place in the bathroom of a laundromat, they were in an authoritative position to dismiss anything that I listened to.

But I will give props to Pitchfork for their list of the Top 50 Music Videos of the 90s, released earlier this week. It’s an interesting mix that seems genuinely well thought-out. It still seems to come from a mainstream perspective as a lot of the non-rock picks are somewhat obvious, but I guess Pitchfork knows its audience, so whatever.

First, let’s take a look at the list before we start arguing about it.

ice cube it was a good day 300x225 Pitchfork’s Top 50 Music Videos of the 90s: What Do We Think?I will give enthusiastic fist-pumps to Pitchfork for including “Everything Is Everything, ” “Criminal,” and “It Was a Good Day,” which are all gems. My son will be particularly tickled to see “Triumph” included, as that is one of his favorite Wu-Tang Clan songs (yes, I am a terrible mother, but I’m also a bad motherf*cker…or something…shut up). But I have to give a HUGE WTF to “1979″ being the Smashing Pumpkins selection. Not only is that video just kind of “meh,” the song is practically the point where you can say that the Smashing Pumpkins should have hung it up. “Today” is obviously the best Smashing Pumpkins video and so perfectly 90s I can barely stand to watch it. What picks do you agree or disagree with on this list?

Smashing Pumpkins as a whole are so perfectly amazingly 90′s. I hear the opening of one of those old songs and BOOM right back in high school. Goddamn.

oh Beck. “Devil’s Haircut” is indeed one of my favorites from the 90s. and Dre with “G-Thang” makes me want to be *mumble* 20-something again.

Where is REM’s Losing My Religion?!? That was an iconic and gorgeous video.

Absolutely Rachel. I agree with you 100%

I remember at the time wondering why they plated 1979 on MTV so much. Even then I would change the channel because it’s so boring.

I loved the “controversial” videos that were often banned or edited. Smack my Bitch Up and Metallica’s cover of Turn the Page.

Those were my favorites just for the controversy.

Man, this list is so… Pitchfork.

Ok, first, whether it is popular or life-changing or overrated or whatever, Smells Like Teen Spirit was what encapulated the 90s. You couldn’t turn on MTV without seeing it once an hour. It was that video that ushered in the whole “grunge” movement that stuck around in it’s various forms for the next 5 years or so. And really, Pearl Jam and STP should be in that discussion as well.

And let’s not forget G’n'R. I kinda hated them, but there was no denying that they were gigantic in the 90s. November Rain had everyone trying to find that story that the video was based on as asking why Stephanie Seymour only had half a face in the coffin.

Really, if you want to talk videos, I think more about Michele Goundry, Mark Kohr and Spike Jonez. It was the vision of the guys making them, more than the performers in them, that really defined the videos of the 90s.

Oh, and I think Bullet with Butterfly Wings when i think Pumpkins videos.

(Sorry to be “that guy” but…)

    It’s THE VERVE on #46.

    As you were.

I don’t even remember seeing the In Bloom video back in the day. I heard the song plenty, sure, but I just watched it and it only barely looked familiar. Interestingly though, I realized that it was more a proto-Foo Fighters video than it was a Nirvana one, if that makes any sense. Kurt looked very uncomfortable, but Dave was totally in his element.

Two Bjorks in the top 10? Lame.

  • Coleen

Where the hell is “California Love” by Dr. Dre and Tupac?

Also, I totally agree that “Smells Like Teen Spirit” deserves to be much higher than 27!

Blind Melon – “No Rain” When I think of ’90s videos, that is what comes to mind. Who can deny the chubby, butterfly girl?
