True Blood’s Kristin Bauer: Always Hungry

And she doesn’t mean for blood. The actress, who plays vampy bloodsucker Pam, admits that she has to starve herself to be on television.

In an interview PopEater asks Bauer about whether there is pressure to stay thin. Bauer replied, ”The other day I realized as long as I’m in this business, I’m going to be hungry. The camera really does add 10 pounds. I’m trying to stay under the weight I want to look like on TV. It’s a good incentive to stay slim and is probably adding years to my life.”

I’m torn between admiring her honesty and clucking my tongue at the blasé way she mentions that she’s “adding years to [her] life” doing so.

No, wait, I’m not really all that torn. Bauer isn’t telling us anything we don’t already know about the television industry. Sure, she’s more honest about it than your typical “oh, I love food, I just do yoga and eat what I want” liarfaces in Hollywood, but honesty isn’t exactly a medal-worthy trait. I will say that it’s irresponsible to say you’re always hungry, strive to be underweight, and that wardrobe checks make you compulsively exercise, then tout it as some kind of fitness regimen that’s putting years on your life.

Kristin Bauer certainly doesn’t appear as emaciated as some Hollywood actresses, but it really chaps my hide when actresses eat nothing all day, exercise for hours daily, and talk about health. Overworking and underfueling is just as hard on your heart as a sedentary lifestyle.

There actually is some evidence that eating a super low-calorie diet can extend one’s life span. Mainly non-primate evidence, though, I believe (mice and dogs, I think?). There are people that follow such a diet. They are, indeed, hungry all the time, but the adherents say they feel a lot healthier, and they believe they are going to live longer because of it.

In any case, it only works if you get plenty of nutrients.

I have also read that severe calorie restriction will extend your life.

But it DOES add years to your face.

Yeah, I have to agree with the previous posters. Studies have found that low calorie diets (under-eating) can indeed add years. Of course, your genes play the biggest role in determining length of life, so long as you don’t screw it up with bad habits.

But I agree with you that it’s nice when actors admit that they are not naturally slim without extreme effort and/or starvation because that is just insulting and adds hours to parenting as we have to counteract the nonsense of that kind of talk.

I agree with everyone else. I would bet that people who are slimmer ARE healthier and are likely to live longer. The actress didn’t say she was starving herself or that she ate nothing all day or that she wanted to be underweight. She said she wanted to be under the weight she wanted to appear to be on screen which could still be within a healthy weight range for her. She said she was hungry, like maybe she eats a little bit less than she would to feel completely full. Most Americans probably don’t even allow themselves to ever feel hunger as they’re constantly shoveling in the food, hence the obesity rates in this country. And exercise is healthy. I think a couple of hours of exercise a day is something more people should strive to do weather it’s walking, jogging, playing sports or running around with their kids.
