Flashback Friday – Singles

This Flashback Friday is brought to you by the heart-stopping and sobering fact that the 90s began over 20 years ago, making a Flashback Friday featuring Singles less than premature.

It’s also brought to you by the fact that Singles made me want to live in Seattle and NOW I DO. Dreams can come true, kids. Sadly, we’re still waiting for that fucking monorail (to go somewhere other than from Westlake Center to the Seattle Center, but in the mean time we managed to get some light rail up in this piece. Not only do I live in Seattle, I live within spitting distance of the very apartment complex where the 20-something Gen-Xers of Singles argued, fucked, and got ready for awesome rock shows. It’s too bad that, by the time I came to live in Seattle, Kurt Cobain was long dead and Pearl Jam had become embarrassing easy-listening dad rock.

Of course you can’t talk about Singles without talking about the music. In fact, the Singles soundtrack could easily be renamed “The Soundtrack of the early 90s.” Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees. Oh man, just listing them off makes me want to swaddle myself entirely in flannel.

Come to wear the flavor is. Come to Debbie Country.

GOD, I loved that movie. It came out in the beginning of my sophomore year in college and I remember going to see it in baggy jeans, boots, and a flannel over a t-shirt.

This is my very favorite of Cameron Crowe’s movies, because this came out while I was in college and I figured that one day I was going to “grow up” and my life was going to be JUST LIKE THIS. It isn’t, but it’s funny how I can look back on “Singles” and feel warm and fuzzy and nostalgic, but “Melrose Place” makes me cringe. That’s a testament to Cameron Crowe’s talent, right there.

    20 years… No it can’t be

Still one of my favorite movies of all time. And as soon as you mentioned “flannel” in your tweet-link, I knew it was going to be this movie! :)

I LOVE this movie. And it is one from which my husband and I can quote with equal ease. One of those movies we saw when we were dating…back in the day. Soundtrack of our courtship, etc.

I thought this movie was so depressing and back then I worried that it would be remembered as representing the 90s, which other than the music, I didn’t think did the 90s justice. Now, here we are :(

Thanks to the magic of technology and the future, I watched Singles on my iPhone while I was on the treadmill the other day.

Jesus, I love this movie. The music, the characters, the lines. It’s all good. The cast! oh what great casting! Matt Dillon,(Touch me I am Dick), Bridget Fonda,(who single handedly made me wear black mini skirts over black tights and a flannel shirt because she looked so cute in it) Campbell Scott (so dreamy and sensative), along with many others including the members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden…good, good stuff here folks. I don’t know why I don’t own this movie. i think I’m buying it tomorrow. Thanks for a great memory.

I listened to this soundtrack, constantly, in college. And now…you’re telling me that was 20 years ago???

Hang on…I need to go fine a cane.

Awesome movie. I feel so old. Living in college town doesn’t help. Many of them weren’t even born yet when that movie came out. Dagger through my heart.
