The latest installment in our books you should have read by now series is One Day. If you follow me on twitter you would have heard me gushing about this book all summer. I adored this book. I literally read this book in one day. No pun intended. Okay, a little bit of a pun.
One Day is about a male and a female college classmate and follows them through twenty years of their life. But before you roll your eyes and think “chic lit,” it is not like that. It is written from each of their perspectives, from “one day” of their life. In letter form. To each other.
It is one of the most creative, thought provoking, heart wrenching, lovely, and brutally honest books I have ever read. And I read, a lot. It is funny, and a tear jerker, at the same time. I love this book so much I literally told every person I know to read it. I have never heard anyone say they didn’t like it.
It is a coming of age story, in the most classic sense. It is about falling in love with the wrong person, and the right person, and finding love with the person right in front of you. It is about growing up, both literally and figuratively. It is about losing everything, and finding out who you really are.
One Day was quickly commissioned into a film, and is being filmed now, staring Anne Hathaway and some British guy I’ve never heard of. I’m almost afraid to see it. I know the movie will never do the story I love so much justice. I’ll probably see it anyway, and complain, loudly, and on twitter, about how everyone should read the book.
