I’ll say upfront that I love Thom Yorke. I haven’t been overly interested in his musical output for a few years, but as an artist, I have a lot of respect for him for managing to do what he wants within the mainstream music industry beast and producing what I consider some of the finest works of music. “The Bends,” “OK Computer,” and “Kid A” have never left my rotation and “Black Swan,” one of his solo albums, is gorgeous. And watching Radiohead’s Scotch Mist special was the perfect way to ring in 2008.
His kooky approach to music and his various related
projects is what I really like about him. You can like or dislike his output, but you can’t really accuse him of not being interesting. This quality of his is very much on display for a charity single that he has teamed up with fellow UK superstars Bryan Ferry, Mark Ronson, Bob Hoskins, Andy Murray, and British P.M. David Cameron to produce for Britain’s Remembrance Day. It’s called “2 Minute Silence” and it’s…well, it’s two minutes of silence.
Here’s a preview if your brain won’t wrap itself around that concept.

And there’s still 1 minute and 50 seconds more after that!
Funds raised from the sale of this single will benefit British veterans and their families.
Yes, it’s silly. But it’s for a good cause and, really, isn’t a moment or two of silence more appropriate for that cause than, say, another rushed and poorly composed musical circle jerk?
