Thom Yorke’s “2 Minute Silence” Charity Single

thom yorke 300x300 Thom Yorkes 2 Minute Silence Charity SingleI’ll say upfront that I love Thom Yorke. I haven’t been overly interested in his musical output for a few years, but as an artist, I have a lot of respect for him for managing to do what he wants within the mainstream music industry beast and producing what I consider some of the finest works of music. “The Bends,” “OK Computer,” and “Kid A” have never left my rotation and “Black Swan,” one of his solo albums, is gorgeous. And watching Radiohead’s Scotch Mist special was the perfect way to ring in 2008.

His kooky approach to music and his various related 2 minute silence 300x300 Thom Yorkes 2 Minute Silence Charity Singleprojects is what I really like about him. You can like or dislike his output, but you can’t really accuse him of not being interesting. This quality of his is very much on display for a charity single that he has teamed up with fellow UK superstars Bryan Ferry, Mark Ronson, Bob Hoskins, Andy Murray, and British P.M. David Cameron to produce for Britain’s Remembrance Day. It’s called “2 Minute Silence” and it’s…well, it’s two minutes of silence.

Here’s a preview if your brain won’t wrap itself around that concept.

And there’s still 1 minute and 50 seconds more after that!

Funds raised from the sale of this single will benefit British veterans and their families.

Yes, it’s silly. But it’s for a good cause and, really, isn’t a moment or two of silence more appropriate for that cause than, say, another rushed and poorly composed musical circle jerk?

Love Thom Yorke. Love Radiohead. Love that his gimmick totally worked on me.

I adore “In Rainbows” (and other stuff by Radiohead, too.)

Thom Yorke is DEFINITELY interesting and quirky- and I’m glad he’s doing something for charity.

Weirdly, he’s not the first person to use silence as the main component of a piece: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4'33
John Cage did it back in the 1950′s. I wonder if Thom Yorke was inspired by him…

That last bit in the link is supposed to read 4’33″ which is how Cage referred to his composition.

Yeah, the whole time I was reading this, I was thinking, “John Cage ripoff.” To perform that one live, the performer must be wearing a formal tuxedo, black tie (not sure of the requirements of a female performer), must come sit at a piano, and must be carrying a stopwatch for accuracy. I presented a recording in high school during a report on avant garde artists.

is there any room for artistic license or individual interpretation in there?
