Gwyneth Paltrow Goes Country Strong

Add “country singer” to Gwyneth Paltrow’s resume.

No, really. Gwyneth performed the title track to her upcoming movie “Country Strong” with Vince Gill at the Country Music Association awards last night. Behold:

She is totally country strong, you guys.

Before we talk about those booties (Death to booties! Kill the booties!) let’s discuss the mindscrew that is Gwyneth Paltrow singing “cain’t” and talkin’ bout cowboys. She plays an alcoholic country singer (you don’t say) looking for a comeback in “Country Strong”, with Tim McGraw as her husband/manager trying to keep her on the straight and narrow path to rhinestone lady cowboy superstardom.

I just made that up. I’m not sure what he’ll try to do in the movie but he usually looks kinda cute so that’s okay.

This is of course not Gwynnie’s first foray into music. Who can forget her “Cruisin’” duet with Huey Lewis and not the News in the 2000 movie “Duets.” I know that as hard as I try to forget a fictional father-daughter duo singing about one-night stands and “opening up and you will find” it’s still pretty difficult. Awkward!

And speaking of duets as we bring this full circle, remember Tim McGraw’s duet with Nelly? That was kind of strange.

Gwyneth’s country strength is quite the stretch from her usual Goop.com macrobiotic Greenwich Village existence, so no telling how long it will last. Will there be a duet with husband Chris Martin in her future to shake things up?

No telling, cowgirl.

Hmm…wasn’t the worse thing I ever heard. But can’t say I’ll be wanting to hear it again.

Beckie, that is perhaps the best ambivalent review I’ve ever read.

My apologies, but that was my honest first reaction. I think she is a fine actress, and I can’t wait to see her on Glee on Tuesday, but the song didn’t move me (in either a good or bad way). Her song just didn’t have that oomph for me.

No apology necessary. I thought it was completely accurate.

I thought she looked awkward playing the gutair and tho it wasn’t terrible I still don’t get it. Why didn’t they cast someone like Faith Hill, Shania Twain, or Sheryl Crow who can actually sing, knows the industry and its pitfall? I gotta say #castingfail.

Yeah, I wondered that myself. Maybe she’s just that Country Strong. Umm…;)

Have to say she had balls to play to that crowd – for that alone, I give her credit. But she pulled it off.

I think country music is used to cross-over stuff by now. It seems like they’re doing it constantly — maybe to help sales by teaming up with pop? Don’t know.

I thought she did great – she was clearly nervous but her voice held up well. I’d buy that song. Looking forward to the movie – then again, I don’t get the whole haterade with Gwenyth to begin with. She’s ok…

I agree. Sure, she’s probably the most eccentric 30-something out there these days, but I have always enjoyed her work. I’m glad she did okay last night, too, as I think it will lay some expectations for her performance on “Glee” next week.

I don’t hate her at all. Given some of the other music/film/tv “talents” out there she’s not too shabby, and I really don’t pay much attention to her personal activities. I just thought this was an interesting direction.

Her booties? Those I hate. I’m owning that.

I think the guitar was more of a prop; didn’t look like she was really playing it. While she was singing, I was thinking, “Don’t give up your day job.” That she got a standing ovation was ridiculous.

I also agree with Wendy that she was horribly miscast for the movie. Yep, not a fan here.

  • Shelley

I kinda liked it but then again I do pronounce can’t as “cain’t” and I don’t particularly care for her but I want to see the movie. I refuse to comment on the booties, even the word “booties” is stupid.

    • http://www.lauriewrites.com Laurie

I didn’t hate it either, honestly.

I love the booties…then again, I own some kind of like those and rock them as often as possible, so there ya go. :)

  • Christina

She kinda sounds like Sheryl Crow. Hmmm.

I want to walk up on that stage, grab her guitar, and walk the eff away. What is she doing with her hand? Strumming? Certainly not. Stop it right now, Paltrow.

That being said, it did take some goops for her to get up there and do that. Country music people carry guns, y’all. And they’ll shoot you in your FACE if they feel like you’re not doing them justice or making fun of them, or whatever.
