Elizabeth Smart Kidnapper Found Guilty

In news that shocked no one, Brian David Mitchell was found guilty on Friday of federal kidnapping after the jury deliberated for 5 hours over two days.  I’m surprised it took that long, but after a more than month long trial they needed to go through the evidence and consider his insanity defense.  He faces life imprisonment.

Elizabeth Smart Elizabeth Smart Kidnapper Found Guilty

Elizabeth gave a lovely and poised press conference after the verdict.  I watched it and spent the whole time thinking how does a person go through a 9 month ordeal where they are kidnapped and raped every day and end up like this?  She should be a motivational speaker.  Write a book.  Something. Watch for yourself below.

Except I suspect she will say her belief in G-d got her through and well, let’s just say I struggle with that one.  After watching her, if faith can get you through that, I need some.

Remind me to never complain about anything. I am simply astounded by amazing people like Elizabeth. I don’t think I would make it through something like that and be as rational and poised as she is. She is the best of all of us.

I have to say that Elizabeth Smart’s parents really piss me off sometimes. I don’t think they have ever gotten in front of the cameras and said, “You know what? We were idiots. We hired this homeless, crazy looking dude, who we didn’t know from Adam, who had no references, was not employed by a reputable agency, who could have been a serial killer, to work around our house. We exposed our children to this man. We put our children in danger. Our daughter was kidnapped and brutalized for nine horrible months and we are partly responsible for her nightmare, and we hope she can forgive us. To all parents out there, please, do not hire homeless people or people you do not know and who are not employed by a reputable company to work on your house. Play it safe.”

Seriously. Elizabeth Smart’s dad annoys me to no end. He’s a moron. WHO ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH would hire somebody off the street to work around their house and see their beautiful kids, without knowing one single thing about this guy? I know, I know, they were trying to minister to the homeless, and pay the homeless and help them out. There are other ways of doing that without putting your children in danger.

I’m with you, Karen. Elizabeth is amazing, no question. But her parents had a serious lapse of judgement. Also – the alarm on their home? Not activated. Windows? Unlocked. Uhh…. Salt Lake may not be the roughest city to live in, but it’s not Mayberry.
