Why I Miss The True Crime Made For TV Movie

Remember when the networks used to make “ripped from the headlines” made for TV movies?  They gave serious acting work to people like Joanna Kerns and Valerie Bertinelli.  Everything from murder to the “Baby M” surrogacy to grandma trying to steal the baby from the lesbian mom custody fights were covered.  And man, I used to eat those things up.  I have been known to watch reruns on Lifetime Movie Network all day when I am home sick.  And that is why I was thrilled to learn Lifetime is going to be airing one about the Amanda Knox trial soon.  Get your tivos ready.

Here are the ones that still stand out for me and I could watch again and again.

1.  Blind Faith-I actually had read the “true crime” book before I watched the movie.  Which I think was a miniseries.  I may have devoted 4 hours of my life to this.  More than once.  Yes, I’m that much of a dork.  A wealthy business man is accused of killing his wife to collect insurance money to pay for his gambling debts.  It starred Robert Urich and Joanna Kerns and here is a random piece of trivia, Tracey Gold married one of the real life sons of the man portrayed in the movie.  She met him while she was visiting her tv mom on set.  Please do not ask why I know this.  I just do.  I think I’ve seen this like 5 times.  It is one of those tv movies that is always on.

2.  Who Is Clark Rockefeller?-this guy pretends to be a Rockefeller and gets married and has a child and then gets divorced and kidnaps the child.  His ex-wife then learns he was lying about who he was.  He was portrayed with convincingly creepiness by Eric McCormack.  I actually searched for this movie on tivo long after is was shown because it got such good reviews and it did not disappoint.  But it did reinforce the idea that you can never really know people.  And who knew Will could act?

3.  In A Child’s Name-this one wins for cheese value alone.  Because the one scene where the parents are sleeping in the dead wife and their son’s, who so clearly killed her, bed, and the police had used something that made the blood glow in the dark and they wake up and the blood is everywhere?  That scene is priceless.  The true story goes something like this….he kills his wife, the grandparents illegally adopt the child, and then the aunt tries to get the kid back.  Valerie Bertinelli’s shining acting moment.  Totally.

4.  Mary Kay Letourneau: All American Girl-I found this story strangely fascinating.  A teacher has sex with a 13 year old student, has his child, goes to jail, then does it again, and goes to jail again.  What 13 year old boy can be that appealing when you are an adult?  Penelope Ann Miller played her as a misunderstood woman but I still didn’t get it.  Still, the movie was entertaining in a very my life is not this much of a trainwreck kind of way.

5.  The Perfect Husband: The Laci Peterson Story-I don’t know anyone who wasn’t fascinated with this story.  As for me, Laci and I shared a birthday and we were pregnant at the exact same time.  We all sat captivated by the tv, would they find her?  I think we all suspected she was dead.  Dean Cain, aka Superman, played this sociopath perfectly with the right amount of creepiness and charm.  But we still never found out why he did it.

So tell me, did I miss any?  Do you miss these as much as me?  Will you watch the Amanda Knox Story or whatever they are going to call it?

Lifetime movies are my most secret guilty pleasure. I haven’t watched the true crime kind but I’ve watched the “omg my daughter has bulimia” and “omg my daughter cuts herself” and “omg my daughter has anorexia” and also the “all these kids in this high school are pregnant, there must be some sort of agreement between them!”.

Thanks for the recommendations. You know I will watch them.

Oh, oh, the secret pact one! I totally watched that!

That glowing blood scene was AWESOME.
My other favorite was Love, Lies and Murder with the father who had his daughter named CINNAMON kill his wife and then married his wife’s sister? And his daughter went to jail…

I have not seen Love, Lies and Murder. Was it a true story? I wonder if I can find it on tivo? (This is a problem I have.)

Crazy Bitch Goes to Italy: the Amanda Knox Story

    I LOVE them.

I just can’t make up my mind on that one. Sometimes I’m convinced she did it and other times I’m not so sure.

Small Sacrifices – the story of Diane Downs starring Farrah Fawcett
The Betty Broderick Story – starring Meredith Baxter
Fatal Vision – the story of Jeffery MacDonald
The Deliberate Stranger – the story of Ted Bundy starring Mark Harmon

I have seen each of these dozens of times, and the books they are based on are even better.

I loved Small Sacrifices-the book and the movie! How could I have forgotten than one.

The other ones you mentioned I have not seen.

I LOOOOOVE these movies! I don’t get lifetime so sadly I don’t seem to get to see them. I’ll have to see if any of our Canadian channels carry them.

The scene with the parents in the glowing bed is seared into my brain and I had no idea what the rest of the movie was about (or the name). Now I need to see it again.

Now I know what I’ll be doing (or hoping to do) for my next sick day!

No Lifetime in Canada? That is sad.

      • http://yesimadethat.blogspot.com Lori

I don’t think we do have it but we have a channel called “W” and I just realized that they often play these types of movies.

AND (pardon my shouting) after a horrendously long day I came home and “The Perfect Husband – the Laci Peterson Story” is on Showcase (another Canadian channel). It’s like they read Mamapop!! Hurray!

“In a Child’s Name” – The best! That Luminol scene still shocks.

Also, the one about Ted Bundy, which particularly gave me the shivers since I live in Florida. In an undisclosed location.

Also, “Helter Skelter” which, I dunno, wasn’t probably on Lifetime. But, true crime nonetheless.

    • http://jodifur.com jodifur

oh, the first Helter Skelter, yes! The one they just redid was not so good.

Oh, I have watched so many of those true crime and women in peril movies! Nancy McKeon was in a few of the WIP ones, I think- The Tracey Thurman Story stands out most in my mind.

    • http://jodifur.com jodifur

I don’t think I know that one. What was it about?

      • http://www.mamakaren.com MamaKaren

Tracey Thurman was an abused wife, and her husband continued to come after her even with the restraining order. During one beatdown he kicked her in the head, I think, which caused some partial paralysis if I remember correctly. He also tried to slash her throat. At least one of the major attacks took place in front of her kids. She ended up suing the police department for not protecting her. The movie is from the late 80s/early 90s.

        • http://jodifur.com jodifur

Yes! I studied that case in college! How could I forget….I never knew there was a movie made. Off to check tivo…

  • Angela

Loved all these movies but in particular Blind Faith (I also somehow knew the Tracey Gold trivia).

Also loved All She Ever Wanted- “Awesome” from Chuck was in that one.

    • http://jodifur.com jodifur

I feel like I saw All she ever wanted, but I can’t remember it.

      • Angela

In All she ever wanted somehow she convinces her husband to kill his parents! Then she starts posining people left and right and eventually goes to jail for it. When she gets out she and her daughter continue to work as nusres and wouldn’t ya know her patients turn up dead again. Can’t remember the actors but wonderful fake southern accents abound!

  • Nicole

Does anyone else remember when there were 3 Amy Fisher movies on in 2 days on the 3 major networks? I know one of them had Alyssa Milano…I remember laughing at the Buttafuco (sp?) casting choices- and sadly yes, I watched all 3.

    • http://jodifur.com Jodifur

      I do remember that!

  • Julie K

Best one ever is Cruel Doubt! With Gwynnie as the pouting teenage daughter who is not at all involved with the murder plot against her parents (including real life mom Blythe Danner).

    • http://jodifur.com Jodifur

Oh, I saw that one. And read the book!
