Internet buzz surrounding this image from Jolie’s photo shoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz for Louis Vuitton’s ‘Core Values’ ad campaign seems to be focused to an absurd degree on her toned-down look – that she’s wearing her own clothes, no make-up (according to sources), etcetera – but let me be the first to say:
Let’s just pause and break this down for a wee moment:
- She’s freaking ANGELINA JOLIE. That she’s wearing her own clothes is hardly some sort of hardship – how much you wanna bet those toned-down, perfectly wrinkly duds are designer and cost hundreds of dollars, regardless?
- No makeup? Are you kidding me? Are her eyelashes naturally dark and lush, her eyelids naturally shadowed and lined in kohl? Here’s a close-up:
And? If in fact she’s some total freak of nature and DOES naturally look like that, straight out of the shower? Then what kind of bullshit is it to be making such a big whoop-dee-fuckin’-do about OMG, NO MAKEUP!?!?! If I looked like THAT without any effort whatsoever, I wouldn’t expect some kind of big pat on the back for just being naturally gorgeous with absolutely no effort.
Perhaps even more irritating (well, to me at least), Vuitton’s PR about this *advertising* campaign makes it sound like the celebrities involved in it (including Bono and Sean Connery) are participating in some philanthropic event (let me underscore, for good measure: ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN) for which they received no compensation, when in fact word is that Jolie signed on with Vuitton for something in the $10 million dollar ballpark (though she supposedly donated some portion of it to charity, nevertheless, even if she donated HALF, getting $5 million to hawk leather bags doesn’t exactly make you Mother Teresa). /end rant
