E! News co-host and red carpet menace Giuliana Rancic was on The Today Show this morning, and given her very public struggles with infertility and IVF, I was guessing she was there to finally announce some happy news. Instead, she announced that she has breast cancer. What in the what?
She found out in August, when her doctor insisted she get a mammogram prior to undergoing a third round of IVF. She didn’t want to. She actually tried to argue with her doctor, claiming she didn’t need one because 1) she was only 36, 2) had no family history of breast cancer, AND 3) had already done prior testing to make sure she wasn’t a carrier for the breast cancer gene. But her doctor held firm.
When the hospital called a few days later to tell her the shocking news, Rancic admits she was immediately “sobbing…It was like the world just crashed around me.”
But a visibly emotional Rancic assured fans, “I will be okay, because I found it early. I’m doing surgery this coming week, and then I go to radiation for six and a half weeks.”
So instead of getting the all-clear she expected and moving forward with her attempts to conceive, she’s now…undergoing cancer treatment. Excuse me, universe, but that is grade-A fucked up.
Once this cancer business is sorted out and its ass decisively kicked, Giuliana (and her husband Bill, aka The Apprentice Original Flavor) plans to resume IVF and have a baby.
“I’m not gonna give up,” she said. When she does get pregnant, “That baby will have saved my life,” she mused. “There’s some master plan. Now I know that [God] was looking out for me.”
Aw, okay. That just kicked up some dust around here. Specifically from my cold dark heart, and into my eyeballs. Now I REALLY want her to get “that baby” she wants so much, and to be nice and healthy for it for many, many years to come and stop looking at me like that COME ON.
