‘The Princess Bride’ Cast Reunites, Awesomeness, Tears Ensue

Picture 46 The Princess Bride Cast Reunites, Awesomeness, Tears Ensue

Okay, I’ll get the bad news out of the way first: The Princess Bride came out 25 years ago. 25 years! It’s old enough to vote and buy cigarettes and drink and be hassled by its mother about its ticking biological clock. Even if you tell yourself that you didn’t ever see it in the theater (and not many people did, honestly) and only fell in love with it later during sleepover parties, you’re officially old.

The good news is that there’s a ton of adorable 25th anniversary reunion stuff going on. First, Entertainment Weekly managed to wrangle up a nice portion of the cast for its annual Reunion issue. It’s on sale now and actually sounds worth picking up, since it features photos and interviews with the casts of Growing Pains, The Carol Burnett Show, Romy & Michelle’s High School Reunion…and Glenn Close and Michael Douglas posing with a bunny. Because…yes. I’m such a sucker for All Of Those.

But here’s a sneak at The Princess Bride photo:

From left to right, that’s Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin and Christopher Guest. Peter Falk and Andre the Giant are the framed photos. Fred Savage was…busy, I guess.

And this cast reunion from Good Morning America is totally worth watching, I promise. It’ll make you happy, listening to the actors (though minus Patinkin, Guest and AGAIN, Savage, WTF) talk with such affection about the film and each other and oh yeah, the time Andre passed out cold in a hotel lobby and nobody knew how to get the seven-foot, four-inch actor off the floor.

I will admit I cried when I watched the interview. I had never heard of the movie until my husband introduced it to me, but since then, we’ve introduced our kids to it, and they’re even quoting it at 6 & 8. It’s a family-friendly movie that has stood the test of time.

25 yrs old???  wow.  And you know, it’s still one of my all-time favorite movies.  After not-quite killing an enormous toad the other week, I was able to use two lines from the movie:  the toad was “almost dead”, and I called it an R.O.U.S. (reptile of unusual size…though I suppose a toad is technically an anphibian…or is that only frogs?).

Fred Savage is now a director, I think, so maybe he was busy?

If you read the little blurb on EW, the comments are hilarious.  It starts out with the “thank god they aren’t going to remake this and ruin it”, and descends into a discussion on why the movie is dreadful because they didn’t have a real Spaniard play Inigo Montoya, and whether Spaniards are Hispanic or not.  Prepare to roll your eyes.

That picture alone is making me blub. Absolutely still my all time favorite movie. Hmm….wondering if my 2.5 yr old is ready for the greatness. Probable need to give it a couple more years, the ROUSes were rather scary.

I got surprisingly emotional at the framed pics of Andre the Giant and Peter Falk. Also at the fact that I will never be as pretty as Robin Wright at any age.

This was my favourite movie growing up. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen it – at least 100, I’m sure. We wore out our VHS copy because we watched it so often. My brother and I used to have contests to see who could quote more of the lines while we were on family road trips. I got a bit misty-eyed watching the videos too.

My husband has this memorized line for line.  I know most of it.

We’re taking a dance class, and when the teacher told the men to go find their ladies and my husband said “Hello, lady” in his best (terrible) Andre voice, I collapsed into giggles and another couple nearly crashed into us.  Admittedly I was pretty slap-happy that evening.

My heart is swollen now. Love, love, love.

Oh, god, I  love this movie so much. Anyone who doesn’t get it is immediately relegated to my B-list.

To bad Mandy Patinkin couldn’t be there! Apparently he is been quoted as saying that Inigo Montoya is his favorite part of his entire career. He sure is my favorite character in the movie, so i missed him here.
