After being blatantly excluded from an informal Fresh Prince of Bel Air reunion at a charity event, Janet Hubert (a.k.a. the show’s first Vivian Banks) confirmed that her bitterness towards Will Smith was still alive and well. After rumors of an actual Fresh Prince reunion began to swirl, Hubert let loose about her former co-star:
“There will never be a reunion … as I will never do anything with an a**hole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”
Carlton is not taking it well.
Smith and Hubert had a well-publicized falling out way back in 1993, when Hubert was replaced on the show by Daphne Reid following years of Will-Aunt Viv discord. Smith claimed that Hubert never got over her sour grapes that the show’s star was a young and relatively inexperienced actor, and Hubert claimed that she was the victim of constant disrespect and lies. While Will Smith is a (suspected, unconfirmed) Scientologist and, therefore, (suspected and unconfirmed) insane, it really sounds like Hubert is being a little nutty herself. Does she really think that the best way to maintain relevance as an actor is to gripe to the media about a 20-year grudge? Who’s going to want to work with someone so hellbent on bad-mouthing a former co-star, no matter what happened? Sounds to me like Aunt Viv is going to have to simmer down and let bygones be bygones if she ever wants to work again, otherwise…
