Ever since Whitney Houston’s passing a little over a week ago, the tributes and covers have been rolling in. Jennifer Hudson and Glee‘s Amber Riley both did Whitney proud, serenading us with lovely versions of “I Will Always Love You.”
At an Obama fundraiser this weekend, Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, tore in to the same tune to astonishing effect. I don’t know if it is because, as a child of the 90s, I will always carry a torch for grunge god Cornell, but I found myself near tears after watching his version. The longing was palpable and hearing it from a man’s perspective was a welcome change of pace. Cornell has always had one of the best voices in rock and to hear the song–first a country classic, then a pop megahit–wailed with such passion is something to behold.
Excuse me while I go listen again and feel a lot of feelings.
