Lindsay Lohan will be rejoining the world of working stiffs, at least for a week or so, when she hosts Saturday Night Live on March 3rd. SNL announced Lohan’s upcoming appearance in an on-air promo this past weekend. Lohan graciously confirmed the appearance when she tweeted, “SNL! I love @NBC !!!!!!!!!!!!!” on Saturday night. Judging from the thirteen exclamation points, I would guess that Lohan is pretty excited.
Lohan has not had an official acting gig since 2010′s cult grindhouse movie Machete. Her most recent gig has been posing nude for Playboy in a spread reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s legendary cover shot from 1953. Monroe’s life had many parallels to Lohan’s: troubled childhood, Hollywood success early in life, lost in the world, substance abuse. Lohan has a longstanding fascination with Monroe and hopefully was self-aware enough to pose for the pictures as a statement to all who consumed them.
Lohan, of course, has rarely been in the media for any good reason and it seems like her legal woes long ago overshadowed her professional achievements. As recently as November 2011, she was being sentenced to jail time and community service for infractions like failing sobriety tests while on house arrest and shoplifting.
With her tarnished reputation and spotty (at best) performances, it has seemed like Lohan’s main export will be notoriety for the foreseeable future. But for all of her missteps, Lohan was always the best person to poke fun at herself. No one could mock her antics better than Lohan herself, especially when she broke up with girlfriend Samantha Ronson.
The Funny or Die video reminded us that Lohan is terrific comedic actress when she has her act together enough to perform. She is, after all, one of the main players in one of the funniest SNL skits in the past 10 years.
The way I see it, both Lohan and SNL need to get back to business. Perhaps the built-in material that Lohan brings to the table will be the springboard that SNL needs.
