Valentine’s Day is nigh, so it’s only appropriate that we recommend some romantic comedies. The trouble is, most of them kind of…suck. But not these ones!

    I love you guys. I truly do. I’ve been reading here for years. But I’m begging of you…please don’t go the route of the 100 clicks to see one post in photos. That’s what made me stop visiting Babble. (Sorry, but I just had to say it.) 

    I adore romantic comedies. The lamer they are the better. I don’t know why, but they just make me happy. Most of the ones on your list, I love. I question zombieland a bit…but hey to each his own.

    I think Zombieland is totally romantic. But then again, I think that the zombie apocalypse will bring us all together. Come on, the rescue at the amusement park? And the twinkie toss at the end? I swoon. Or maybe I just love that movie to an absurd level.

    I am with you on all of these except Juno.  It is the one movie I actually dislike more as time passes.

    Also, your commentary on High Fidelity is spot on; I love that he realizes it is him and he looks at himself critically.

       Juno has continually felt to me like one of those really trendy haircuts I had to have at the time and then when I look at the pictures  later I wonder what on earth I was thinking. Glad I’m not alone.

    You include Zombieland, which I like, but why not a nod to Shaun of the Dead, which actually billed itself as a romantic comedy with zombies? Or was it a “one or the other” thing? Either way, this list warmed my cold, cynical heart. Well done.

      Scott Pilgrim made my short-list, but I eventually excluded it because I kind of despise Ramona Flowers.

      I am kicking myself for not including that one. I loved that movie (it’s what finally made me get the whole Ryan Gosling craze, too).

    My go-to embarrassing rom-com is While You Were Sleeping.  I don’t know why, but I love that movie. 
    And one that falls into the Eternal Sunshine undefinable zone is Moulin Rouge.  It’s got great laughs, but it’s also so sad.  Still, I will drop everything to watch it and sing along.  In the middle of the night.  Scantily clad.  In another man’s arms. In an elephant.

      Oh lordo, don’t get me started on Moulin Rouge. Absolutely one of my favorite movies EVER. The Elephant Room comedy almost makes up for the hysterical sobbing at the end of the film.

    I will admit that I viscerally hated Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Much in the same way that I really, really hate paintings by Jackson Pollock but I will go out of my way to see them anyway because they take my breath away, but man, they give me a headache.

    While I totally understand why you wouldn’t want 3 John Cusack movies on here, Grosse Pointe Blank is probably my favorite romantic comedy ever. It’s also the only one I’ve ever convinced multiple boys to watch (and enjoy!) with me.

    And even if it’s a stereotypical romantic comedy, the first Bridget Jones’ Diary just gets better every time I watch it. See also: Hugh Grant/Colin Firth fist fight.
