The Friendship Comedy Metric: Five Incredibly Dumb Movies You Must Find Funny If We’re Going To Be Friends

zoolander tiny phone The Friendship Comedy Metric: Five Incredibly Dumb Movies You Must Find Funny If Were Going To Be Friends

That title sounds brattier than I intended, because I’m not saying these five movies have to be your favorite five movies or anything. I’m not saying you even need to double over in hysterical laughter while watching them (though that wouldn’t hurt), but MOSTLY these movies must have at least made some kind of impression on you, enough that you can identify the fact that whenever I open my mouth to say something “funny,” there’s a 99% chance it’s a quote from one of these movies.

(So basically I should have titled this post “Amalah’s Top Five Most-Quoted Stupid Comedies.” But see, that’s not bratty enough. Sure, I quote these movies a lot, but I also need you to understand WHY I quote these movies a lot.)

(HINT: Because they’re hilarious. Stupid, but hilarious. And that just about sums up an evening with me around, too.)

1) Idiocracy

The first time I watched this movie I thought it was the dumbest thing I had ever seen. And then two days later I randomly said that something “had what plants crave” and cracked my ass up proper. I’ve since watched this movie approximately 4,123 times. It is still the dumbest thing I have ever seen, but THAT’S THE POINT, PEOPLE.

MOST QUOTED: I like money, Monday Night Rehabilitation, it’s got electrolytes! Welcome to Costco, I love you. And the U.N. un-nazied the world – forever.

2) Zoolander

I’m still not entirely sure how a cast of Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell — three actors I am all particularly lukewarm about, overall — came together to create something so glorious and over-the-top bizarre that improves exponentially with each and every viewing. It’s got smart moments that are dipped and deep-fried in pure stupidity, and I adore it.

MOST QUOTED: Freak gasoline fight accident, ambi-turner, investigatory journalism, ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO

3) South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

If you’re starting to get the sense that I have the sense of humor of a 12-year-old boy, you’re right. (Note that if I expanded this list to 10 movies it would also include The Hangover, Anchorman, and MAYBE EVEN DUMB & DUMBER.) Let’s hang out! I’ll shoot nerf bullets at your face. (But I also love Mean Girls, Clueless and Bridesmaids too! I’m still a girl I swear!)

MOST QUOTED: I don’t trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn’t die, that movie has warped my fragile little mind, can I finish CAN I FINISH? Okay, I’m finished. (Also assorted quotes that are unsuitable for reprinting here on this website.)

4) Office Space

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t think this movie was funny. Don’t be that guy, at least publicly, in the comments.

MOST QUOTED: PC load letter, case of the Mondays, TPS reports, federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison, set the building on fire, no-talent ass-clown.

5) Galaxy Quest

Yeah, it’s got Tim Allen in it, you wanna fight about it? It’s also got Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shaloub…and lines I will probably quote for the rest of my life. DEAL WITH IT.

MOST QUOTED: Did you guys ever WATCH the show? Grabthar’s hammer, that was a hell of a thing, I see you’ve managed to get your shirt off, THIS EPISODE WAS BADLY WRITTEN.

Idiocracy: For me, the most often quoted, other than those you mentioned, are “GO ‘WAY, BATIN’,” “the ‘comony,” and every time B asks me if I want a Starbucks, I tell him we don’t have time for a blowjob right now.

I have only seen Galaxy Quest once (not that I didn’t like it; as I recall it was hilarious). All the rest? At least 4,000 times.

My husband and I speak to each other like Enrico Colantoni’s character in Galaxy Quest (Mathesar) all the time.  Aaaaaaare you making dinneeeeeer toniiiiiiight or am Iiiiiiiii? Hmmmmm?

Galaxy Quest is pure awesome.  “Oh, that’s not right” is a big one around here.

The Emperor’s New Groove is a secret favorite of mine. I love it when the panthers are slowly approaching and there’s a quick shot of a kitten being “ferocious”. My friend and I also say, “Llama faaaace!” quite a bit. So no shame.

I LOVE Galaxy Quest. I’ll admit right here I cry every damn time poor Quellek…you know.  “Let’s get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!” And Office Space…love it. “No-talent assclown” also a favorite. So many good lines….

I have to see Idiocracy again, but the concept of it actually scares me because, as a former teacher, I feel I SEE IT HAPPENING.

On our second “date”, my now-husband and I watched Clerks. I had seen it and knew that if he thought it was funny, we’d be a good match. If he was offended? NEXT. Fifteen years and a son named Dante later, I think you can tell what he thought of the movie.

Didn’t you get the memo about the cover sheets for the TPS reports? Love that movie!

    Idiocracy? It IS happening.

I’ve never seen any of these! Which should I start with?

None of these movies are dumb. Also, next Friday is Hawaiian shirt day, so you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.

I need too see Idiocracy, apparently, because I’ve seen all of these except that and adore them mightily. Especially Office Space “I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it, Bob” and Galaxy Quest “Oh, that’s not right”. And I also have mad love for The Emporers New Groove” (I read the comments!) “You should have thought of that before you became peasants!”

Love that scene in Zoolander! Even more so since I realized that Meekus is played by a young
    Alexander Skarsgård.

  • Endersgrrl

I love all of these movies, but my most quoted movie of all time is Wayne’s World. If Bunjamin was an ice cream flavor, he’d be pralines and dick…

Office Space is up there in my top 5 as well, but I think I my most often quoted movie is Anchorman. I think it comes up in conversation at least a few times a week. Especially if somebody mentions a lamp, or mahogany.

Office Space will always be the perfect encapsulation of cube life for me, the end.  Also I loved Galaxy Quest because I am both a sci fi nerd and a lover of silly movies.  Finally, somehow I failed to see Idiocracy when it came out and caught it on Netflix only last year.  How could I have missed it?  Depressing.

The airplane bathroom scene in Tommy Boy makes me laugh hysterically every time.  Never gets old.

I loved Extract! “Waiting” is a rip-off of Office Space, but I liked it, too. Plus, it has Ryan Reynolds. Rawr.
