10 Movies You Should Absolutely Not Watch While Pregnant

From sob-fests to traumatic births, and it only gets worse from there. Take it from me– Put down the remote.

Rosemary's Baby

Picture 1 of 10

Ever feel like your growing baby is sucking the energy right out of you? Ha ha ha, pregnancy brain! I think we've found someone who can relate, and then some. As her pregnancy progresses, Rosemary gets an itching feeling something is not quite right and no one believes her. Her pregnancy is excruciating and she's completely, utterly, alone. Oh right, that's because (spoiler alert) everyone she knows is in on a con to use her womb to bring forth the son of rape-Satan. Don't worry though, I'm sure YOUR baby isn't evil, you're just a little tired from that extra walk yesterday.

Here are 10 movies you should absolutely not watch while pregnant.

We had someone tell us, in all seriousness, to watch Orphan before we adopted our two boys. She said it was something we might want to consider before we made any final decisions. (We skipped the movie and went ahead an adopted them. )

Are you kidding me? And they WEREN’T kidding? People never cease to astonish me.

Do you need me to get some weapons? We can take care of them for you.

    • DianaCLT

That someone is a dumbass, to the infinite degree.   My adopted self wants to go kick that someone’s dumb ass.

  • HeatherMSM47

My thoughts exactly (on the weapons and general ass stomping that is needed for telling you to watch that movie)

  • HeatherMSM47

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it everytime someone brings up “Up”…that movie opening damn near killed me (oh and dont even get me started on the sad little boy who Dad’s new girlriend/wife tells not to call and the dog who is just too sweet to be mean…..actively crying at work now.

Anyyyyway, my “must avoid during pregnancy” movies were things like “Radio” (why are you mean to him?! LET HIM RIDE THE BUS WITH THE PLAYERS…all while wailing), they were supposed to be sad…just not like life scarring sad. I still tear up when I think about it and I never watched that movie again after that particular scene.

Also, The Help.  Miss Celia’s miscarraige scene is pretty awful.  I saw it in the theater with a friend who had recently gone through a loss.  Even though we had both read the book and knew it was coming, it still had us both doing a quiet bawl in the theater.

    • http://twitter.com/thegrumbles the grumbles

Oh man, like The Help wasn’t emotional enough. I forgot about that whole part. Maybe I blocked it out for my own protection.

  • Snarky_Amber

I nominate We Need to Talk about Kevin. Do not watch that movie unless you’re cool with the possibility that, after birth, you will develop an unintentional side-eye every time your baby has a crying fit that just won’t quit.

  • Brittany

I once told my pregnant, type 1 diabetic sister-in-law to watch Steel Magnolias.  I was only thinking about our shared fondness for 80s chick flicks, but if she ever does see it, she will probably never speak to me again.

I think Up needs to have its own spot on this list.   THREE cries during that movie for me while pregnant: the opening montage (obviously), Carl discovering what was in Ellie’s adventure book toward the end, and when Russell gets the Ellie badge.  My husband was taking a nap when I was watching it and woke up to me sobbing on the couch.  He had no idea what was going on.

    • Snarky_Amber

Seriously, that fucking movie. I loved it, but it put me through such an emotional ringer I haven’t watched it since the first time.

      • http://fancybob.wordpress.com/ fancybob

See, I’d already seen it at least once by that point, so my stupid self really should have known better.  Damn you, Pixar!

Up is my go-to “need a good cry” movie.  Because most of the crying’s at the beginning, and then I get to be happy at the end.  But yeah, seeing it in theatres – OMG!

I fricking LOVE Mommie Dearest, what does that say about me?! “NO…MORE…WIRE…HANGERRRRRRSSSSS.”

    Beotch was crazy-train.

UP is a sneaker-bawl, and they get you so early on! Many, many tears

    • http://twitter.com/thegrumbles the grumbles

       you would.

    • SuzyQuzey

My sister and I started referring to our mother as Joan after Mommie Dearest came out. Our mom was a handful of crazy.

I’m going to throw out there ‘Knocked Up’ for all the sisters who go knocked up by their bar boyfriends and had no clue how things were going to turn out. Wait, that’s just me. Well, I was eight months pregnant and cried my eyes out while yelling at the television, ‘We all don’t get happy endings!’

Silver lining: you aren’t stuck with Seth Rogan for the rest of your life!

  • LadyJess78

About 7 months after my son was stillborn, I was pregnant with my daughter and went to see Taking Lives. I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine. Scissors and I’ll never ever open my eyes again. Absolutely horrible.

  • Barbra Baker

“The Road” with Viggo Mortenson.  I was newly pregnant and watching the labor scene darn near made my heart stop.  And then the rest of the movie just went downhill.  I was in such emotional turmoil at the end I couldn’t even escape the theater.  Just sat there in shock and distressed by how stupid I was to bring a helpless baby into such a world where humanity sucks so bad

    • MollyGMartin

OHGAWDYES.   I also nominate “It’s Alive” — the baby kills everyone in the delivery room.

      • http://rockygrace.blogspot.com/ RockyCat

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up “It’s Alive” …

OHMYGOD I accidently watched that documentary twice (well really 1.5 times).  I think because the story was so horrific, I blocked it out in my mind.  Then, like a year later, I was cruising for something to watch on Netflix Instant, and came across it.  I started watching it thinking that it seemed familiar and then BOOM it hit me.  I think I cried harder at that story than anything else I’ve ever seen.  At times I was too afraid to even look at the TV because that woman literally made my skin crawl.

Just last week I watched The Decedents while 9 months pregnant. I sobbed so much. Children saying goodbye to their mother, parents saying goodbye to their daughter, husband saying goodbye to his wife….I was sobbing so badly at the end and my 3 yr old kept asking me why I was crying. I told my husband, “Tell *sob* her *sob* whyyy…..*sobsobsob*”

Pan’s Labyrinth while pregnant with number 1. SPOLIERS: The mom dies in labor and then the crazy step-dad kills the main character after all the other crazy that goes on?? Not good. In the theater I cried to my husband “why would we go see a movie where someone DIES in labor?!?! Who does that?????”
