Live With Kelly and…This Guy, I Guess? 5 Facts About Michael Strahan

So, after nearly a year of guest co-hosts, Kelly Ripa has finally found that special someone to fill Regis’s shoes: former New York Giant Michael Strahan.

(Actually, he’ll probably need to have new shoes made because Regis is super tiny, whereas Michael is, well, built like a linebacker.)

I’m not big into American football, so I must admit I don’t know much about Strahan, so why don’t we get to know him a little better? After all, he’s about to come into millions of homes every weekday as part of the background noise we work-at-home/stay-at-homes employ to keep from going crazy.

5 Fun Facts About Michael Strahan

1. Michael loves animals.

Shortly after Michael Vick was arrested for his participation in a dogfighting ring, Strahan appeared in a PETA PSA. While the PSA was not about dogfighting (instead it’s about not leaving your pets outside at night), Strahan has said he was prompted to participate in order to advocate for those who “don’t have a voice.” Aww.

2. Michael is BIG.

Kelly Ripa is 5’3″ and weighs about as much as a wet toothpick. Michael, on the other hand, is 6’5″ and 275 pounds. They look kind of funny next to each other.

3. Michael’s Wikipedia page is weirdly complimentary.

I’m not sure this meets with Wikipedia’s quality standards, but apparently as a morning talk show host, “he is knowledgeable and articulate, the antithesis of the football player image.” Seems kind of subjective to me. Maybe his mom does his wiki page.

4. Michael has four kids from two marriages.

…One of which did not end well. His second wife accused him of beating her, “videotaping her sister” (DOING WHAT?) and frequent adultery. She won quite a large settlement in their divorce ($15M, plus $18,000 a month in child support), and it’s rumored that a verse in Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” is about him. (Okay, so I made up that rumor, but it could be true.) Strahan is currently engaged to Eddie Murphy’s ex-wife Nicole Murphy.

5. Michael supports marriage equality.

The sports world is more than a little homophobic as a rule, so it was kind of a big deal with Strahan came out in support of marriage equality in New York (never mind the fact that he, along with the Giants, actually resides in New Jersey). Here is Michael’s support ad with fiancee Nicole:

I actually really enjoy him with Kelly. As someone who watches *sigh* this show every day…my first choice would have been Jeff Probst…but since dude is getting his very OWN talk show..WTF?!, I’m on board with Michael Strahan.

    • Snarky_Amber

i would have cast my vote for Josh Groban if anyone had asked me, but he’ll do.

      • alimartell

        YES. Josh Groban. Agree.

OMG NICOLE MURPHY FROM VH1′s HOLLYWOOD EXES (which I’m pretty sure no one in the world but me watches)! WORLDS COLLIDING!!! (And that is my last all caps comment moment today. Promise. :))

    • Snarky_Amber

Don’t you dare stop all-capsing at me.

I also was rooting for Josh Groban, but I’ve seen Strahan with Kelly a bunch of times and he’s adorably dorky and they have very good chemistry. I like the dude.

    • Snarky_Amber

I haven’t seen him yet. The story from his second wife gave me some pause, but if those allegations are false, he sounds like a sweetheart

  • mrs chaos

I’m not a regular watcher, but I’ve seen it a few times when he’s co-hosting and I find him hilarious.
But…I also love him during football season with the Fox guys on Sunday mornings. Perhaps I have a Strahan problem.

    • Snarky_Amber

It doesn’t sound like a problem at all. ;)

  • SuzyQuzey

I’m not terribly thrilled by this choice. I think Jerry O’Connell would have been better. Also, Seth Myers, but he’s busy.

    • Snarky_Amber

If only they’d finally cancel SNL and free up Seth’s schedule. When was the last time that was worth watching?

I’ve only seen Michael co-host a few times, but he is surprising charming and articulate. I mean, my husband watches ESPN non-stop, so a lot of the former jocks who become commentators sounds suprisingly like, oh, I dunno, former jocks. Strahan is funny and sweet. I have enjoyed some of the others more, but I did not get a ballot. I watched Seth Meyers today and literally said outloud, “when are they going to settle on someone already!?” And there he is.

    • Snarky_Amber

Yeah, it was a “rumor” yesterday that he would be announced on September 4, and today the powers that be just decided to let the cat out of the bag. I kind of like the variety of guest hosts, and it’s certainly a good way to try out your potentials, since chemistry is so important.

  • Snarky_Amber

I was with you until Nick Lachey! :) I pretty much can’t get enough of NPH, but with two babies at home I imagine he’s trying to cut back on the number of commitments in his schedule. Still, I would be okay with him on my TV all day.

    • staceygecko

Agreed about NPH. I love him in everything he does, but I really enjoy his banter with Kelly. Although doesn’t HIMYM shoot in LA? That would be one heck of a commute to go back and forth.

I also like Joel McHale with Kelly, but he’s probably too snarky for LIVE.

  • Hollypainyo

Admittedly, I’m a pretty big football fan, but that’s also made me weary of players as commentators or TV personalities because most of them are a super stilted and not nearly as charming as they think they are.

Having said that, I knew Michael Strahan would have a good post-football TV career even before he retired. He already had the presence other players take a few years to develop, if they develop it at all.

    • Snarky_Amber

I hear you. There are a few good sports stars turned commentators, but they seem to be exceptions.

  • MollyGMartin

    FAVORITE BLOG TITLE.

  • Rachel

Michael is a bad choice. I won’t watch Live anymore. There were so many better choices like Seth, Nick, and Josh. I will be bored with a football commentator. Plus his marriage past seems too nasty for Live.

  • gagapoo

just odd couple live show. she’s short and he’s way too tall. just doesn’t look right. but they picked him anyway….
