When my husband and I sat down to watch the first eight episodes of Showtime’s Homeland in one sitting (do not judge—it’s *that* good. The Emmys were not wrong this year), the first thing he noticed about Claire Danes and her CIA agent character Carrie Mathison was that a) girl sure can play crazy like a real crazy person and b) girl sure can cry.
Unfortunately for him, he wasn’t around in the early 90s, when Claire Danes’ lip quiverslashcry first came into my life and my heart when Angela Chase and her flaming red hair and flannel and Doc Martens cried about anything and everything related to Jordan Catalano. There was nothing un-epic about an Angela Chase ugly cry.
And once My So-Called Life was cut way, way too short after just one perfect season, Claire Danes up and took her ugly cry to other forms of media—Brokedown Palace, Romeo+Juliet, Little Women, Temple Grandin, Igby Goes Down.
And now, we get to watch it every week on Homeland. And on the Claire Danes Cry Face Project tumblr, my new favorite thing on the internet ever.
The site is simple, really, with goals that are hardly lofty: “When Claire Danes cries on film, we document it.” I honestly didn’t think I’d ever love a crying actor more than I love Dawson Leery and his awful, weepy, now-famous .gif. But alas, there is now this tumblr, and it’s wonderful. There’s even a Pinterest page and they are taking submissions.
I just can’t believe I didn’t think of it first.
