After three years hosting the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais is being replaced this upcoming January with the hilarious Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. And while I have disagreed with a number of the Hollywood Foreign Press’s decisions over the years, I have to give them mad props for this one, for a number of reasons.
First, I know some people love Ricky Gervais’s envelope-pushing approach, but he tends to blow his wad in the opener, saying something(s) that really piss(es) off at least one person, and then he mysteriously disappears for an hour. In other words, while he’s a good comedian he’s not a very good awards show host. The primary roles of an awards show host are to keep the evening moving smoothly while also breaking things up periodically with comedy, not simply to push a crowd of egotists to the edge and then hide backstage. On the other hand…
Yup.
Especially these two bitches, who are each very funny on their own, but particularly hilarious as a duo. In fact, it’s my opinion that, during their time as co-anchors of Weekend Update, they were actually better than OG anchors Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd. We’ll just forget about that whole Baby Mama thing.
Second, Amy Poehler in particular has already proven she can construct a great bit to liven up the evening. At the last two Emmy ceremonies, Poehler has been behind some of the funniest Emmy moments on television. Last month, for example, she and Julia Louis Dreyfuss made this happen:
Easily the funniest thing to happen all evening, even outdoing the previous bit Poehler put together with her fellow nominees:
I’m calling it right now – all you idiots who say women aren’t as funny as men are going to eat your words this January.
