Best Pop Songs From Kids’ Movies

Two weeks ago we took my two-year-old daughter to a movie theater for the first time.  We saw Wreck It Ralph (which, for what it’s worth, was incredibly clever and entertaining for those of us who came of age in the ColecoVision-Nintendo-Sega age).  It.  Was.  A.  Very.  Big.  Deal.  See, I love going to the movies.  I could go–and have gone–two and three times in a weekend.  Even now, faced with a wee person in the mix, my husband and I divide and conquer, seeking flicks alone so we can get to the theater regularly.  I would’ve given birth to the kid in a Regal Cinema if I could’ve.

But the floors are sticky enough.

But even as we had a great inaugural kidlet moviegoing experience, as we trudged out of the theater, I felt an impending sense of dread.  (I mean, I felt it after I stopped to marvel, “Someone in this dark corridor came into the world via another dark corridor…MINE.”)  My dread originated in the pit of my stomach, where you just *know* things.  And I just *know* that, before too long, my kid will be dragging me to the theater to see a lot of craptastic movies.

Where will I find solace, watching White Princess Adventure Time 4: This Time It’s Personal…And Sparkly?  Where is the pleasure in taking your kid to see a worldwide simulcast of Justin Bieber renting a car for the first time, or whatever the kids will be digging in 2019?

Just Googled “How old is Justin Bieber?” Am on so many watchlists now.

Then it hit me: the music.  Kids movies always boast a catchy tune or two.  Maybe [in between sips of hard liquor smuggled in via a Nehi bottle I found in the parking lot] I can forget the kid flick and focus on the music.  To get me in the mood, I’ve built myself a little playlist of the best pop songs to come out of kid movies in the last 30 years.  You will notice that I have ignored Disney pap from Elton John and Phil Collins.  Phil Collins, I know you’re having a tough time (can’t drum anymore, routinely skewered by music lovers the world over) but I just can’t abide “You’ll Be In My Heart.”  I just can’t.

“Magic Dance” by David Bowie from the movie Labyrinth. My sister and I would go back and forth, line by line on that one.

Oh. My. Gawd. Erin wins the Internet.

The fact that you included Cyndi Lauper’s tune from Goonies makes my heart swell with an overwhelming sensation of love. It’s that or the chili dogs. I can’t be 100% certain…

    • MollyGMartin

Maybe it’s that you love chili dogs? Wait…that’s me. Anyway, let’s be friends :)

        Mmmm…chili dogs…You were saying?

Okay, I have to defend Phil Collins here. First, because I know for a fact that he did that Tarzan song because he’s BFFs with the music director over there at Disney (Not sure if he’s still the music director, but he was at the time. Chris Montan). I know this because said music director’s wife helped establish the small non-profit that I used to work for, and I heard these words straight from her mouth (with hubby by her side), sitting in their living room, at a non-profit shindig. It was a favor to his bestie. Secondly, I really could not stand that song when it first came out. I thought it was dripping with cheese…and not in a good way. But? Then I had a baby I could call my own. And that little monkey and I took our first Mommy ‘n’ Me class when he was 9 months old. And our lovely teacher, Teacher Doris, would play that song every single week, while we, the mommies, sat in a circle on the rug, embracing our babies and swaying to the music (HolyRunOnSentence, Batman!). And now? Let me tell you, I cannot hear that song without tearing up every damn time. I miss those sweet moments. So, yeah. Phil gets a pass from me.

“Upside Down” is awesome, yummy goodness. That entire soundtrack is wonderful. It’s the only time I’ve ever watched a movie, then walked straight into a store to buy the CD (Borders, RIP). LOVE. IT.

Isn’t “Upside Down” such catchy goodness??? Aw, Phil…that’s a sweet story. And, y’know, if the Tarzan song didn’t grate on me, I’d focus on him helping out the “This American Life” writer who wanted to talk to him about “Against All Odds” (Google if you didn’t hear it). It really was lovely :) Thanks, Diana!

That Curious George movie is also known as “Mommy is going to take a nap now Movie” at our house… The 2yo loves it and that nice Jack Johnson music keeps us all mellow.

    • MollyGMartin

Oh great. Now I want a nap.

Here…I’ll do you a favor and go back to the first Karate Kid: “It’s a cruel…sum-mer…leaving me here on my own…”

  • Roo Ciambriello

I actually love that Curious George is one kids movie that doesn’t have a soundtrack that makes me want to gouge out my eyes.

    • MollyGMartin

      Powerful praise.
