If you’re a celebrity and you have to be embroiled in some kind of relatively minor and embarrassing scandal, a holiday is a good day to do it. Most people are off doing other things and aren’t paying attention to the usual media outlets, so your yucky episode has a shot of staying just under the radar and not turning into an unnecessary shitstorm.
So I feel kiiiiinda bad about bringing this up, but I thought the fact that Halle Berry‘s latest drama happened on Thanksgiving to be too perfect to pass up.
What happened is that Halle Berry’s ex, Gabriel Aubry, arrived at Berry’s house yesterday to drop off their daughter, Nahla. Olivier Martinez, Berry’s fiance, came to the door to talk to Aubry about how tense things had been between the three of them recently to try to smooth things over.
It did not go well.
Aubry’s response to Martinez’s attempt at mediation was to start throwing punches. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like the scene in High Fidelity when Ian tries to reason with Rob.
Olivier made a citizen’s arrest on Aubry, which is kind of bad ass, and then the cops showed up to finish the job. Both men had to go to the emergency room for some injuries. Aubry is now under a restraining order and can’t go near Berry, Martinez, or Nahla for the time being.
I feel for Nahla, since she surely can’t understand why things seem to be yucky between her parents. And I hope that the three “adults” in this scenario can get themselves under control for her sake as soon as possible.
What piqued my interest in this story is that we so often think of celebrities as being on some other plane of humanity. Sure, being wealthy makes life and its concerns a little different, but your fiance and your ex coming to blows? On Thanksgiving, that day of gratefulness that goes horribly wrong for just about everybody at least once? I can feel a collective sigh of, “Been there,” coming from us commoners.
