Modern Family Star Ariel Winter Dealing With Her Own Family Drama

There is a whole lotta drama unfolding for one of television’s most beloved comedies, and specifically, for one of its younger stars. Ariel Winter, who is 14-years-old and plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, was removed from her mother’s home roughly one week ago. Her 34-year-old sister, Shanelle Gray, was awarded temporary custody.

Hold up.

Alex Dunphy is ACTUALLY 14-years-old? Does anyone else remember a time when only 30-year-olds were allowed to play high schoolers, because I’M A LITTLE CONFUSED.

Anyway.

Ariel Winter/Alex Dunphy was removed after her sister petitioned the court, citing abuse at the hands and mouth of their mother, Chrystal Workman. The alleged abuse is said to be both physical and emotional, and it should go without saying that the whole thing sounds absolutely horrific. (So much so that I won’t spend much time making fun of the spelling of the Evil Mother’s name.) Chrystal has flatly denied the rumors, claiming she has proof in the form of “letters” from her daughter’s stylists (WTF?) and plus her son totally has her back.

And as if this isn’t all messy enough, Chrystal has upped the ante by announcing that her 14-year-old golden ticket is a lying sack of shit, because she TOTES caught her trying to do the no-pants-dance with an 18-year-old boy in their house and is just throwing a major temper tantrum because her mom is a cock blocking sonofabitch. Here statement reads:

My fourteen-year-old daughter has been dating an eighteen-and-a-half-year-old man, and when I caught them engaging in behavior that I feel my daughter is too young mentally and physically to understand and fully grasp I put a stop to it immediately. I love my daughter very much. I would never abuse her in anyway and I have always tried my best to always protect her and do what is right for her. Because legally he is an adult and if he wants to engage in adult behavior with a minor than he should also be ready to suffer adult consequences for his actions.

Authorities, however, are noting that Chrystal’s story sounds suspicious, given that she only revealed this issue AFTER Ariel/Alex was removed from the home, and nearly TWO WEEKS after the incident actually took place. They seem to think, like most sane, rational people, that a mother might file a statutory rape complaint IMMEDIATELY following the incident, and not at a moment to gain some sort of publicity leverage. I’m pretty fucking sure *I* would anyway.

Let’s hope this clears up for the young star.

When I read about this my heart sunk so hard. Those child stars are already stripped of a lot of the innocence that comes with being a plain ole kid when they have talent of that mighty caliber, so to add an asshat mom, physically and/or emotionally into the mix is gut-wrenching. Ugh!

I, too, felt so bad for this kid when I read the news. She’s great on the show (and acting her age? what the what?) — I hope she finds solace in her talent :(

  • Roo Ciambriello

Poor thing. I hope she’s doing okay. :(

This is super sad. And to have to deal with this in the spotlight? No thanks.

I saw this today on well, “Today,” and my hear sunk as well. I hope her sister can provide her some stability.
And hey! “Cock-blocking sonofabitch” was my nickname in high school!

Show of hands: who wants to help me convince Julie Bowen to adopt her?

poor thing. I hope, at the very least, the adults on the set are a stabilizing force for her. I remember reading about Patty Duke, and how her batshit family sold her out, but Anne Bancroft was this completely sane, normal adult who probably saved her life just by being a grown up, and ever since I read that I always hope these kids have someone like that. especially now that I have kids and I’m a ridiculous bleeding heart.

If it makes you feel better about the age of people playing teens these days…her older sister on the show is played by a 20-something. As she should be….;-)

I heard about this a couple of days ago and went a-Googling. One site also said that her mom was attempting to sexualize her. Uhhhhh…what the fracking hell does that mean??? *shudders*

I also assumed she was much older.. probably because I recall seeing Sarah Hyland a few times and she is a few years older than her character. Poor girl.. I hope she has a quiet, stabiling force – in her sister, in her cast mates, in her teachers, in ANY OF THESE PEOPLE.
