Yesterday, the 2013 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced and for most of the honorees…IT’S ABOUT TIME!!
The inductees include Albert King, Donna Summer, Heart, Public Enemy, Rush (!!!) and…Randy Newman? Quincy Jones and Lou Adler will also be honored at this year’s ceremony.

That VOICE.
Alright…Randy Newman. I admit, the guy’s been nominated for and won a bunch of awards. He has written most of the music heard in animated films by Disney, compromising a good deal of the soundtrack to my kids’ lives, and I’ll admit again I like some of those songs…when sung by other people. When he sings though? It’s like a Pavlovian response – nothing but the most guttural GROOOAAAANNNNNN.
Do you know anyone who actually says, “OH! Randy Newman! I have ALL his albums!!!” Probably not. I’ll concede – he’s done a good job at what he does. I just feel weird knowing he’ll probably have a medley of his songs performed…right after a medley of Public Enemy hits.
So…we have “Fight the Power” and “Don’t Believe the Hype” and coming up next it’s “That’ll Do” from Babe: Pig in the City!
::wild crowd applause::
(or something)
Combined with that hilarious odd couple, the performances and artists being honored have me pretty excited. I mean, RUSH. I know I might be alone in this, but they’re pretty kick ass. And they made what could have been a mediocre movie into a great one. I’m talking about I Love You Man.
And finally I’m almost MOST excited about Heart, as they’re my go-to for karaoke nights. “Barracuda”, “Magic Man”, and classic 80′s hits “Never” and “These Dreams”? Ahhh, be still my forever beating Heart. (See what I did there? COMEDY GOLD.)
Bands who were nominated but not chosen include The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Meters, N.W.A and Procol Harum. Admittedly, I’ve never heard of The Marvelettes or The Meters. But JESUS MARY AND JOSEPH – if I could have seen the remaining members of N.W.A. and Public Enemy…together? I can’t even.
What about you? Any bands you’re particularly excited about seeing honored this year? Any bands you feel are continually passed up?
