So Long, And Thanks For All The Twinkies: A 2012 Pop Culture Exorcism

2012 brought us some crazy stuff (like horse masks and Apple maps) and some weird phrases (YOLO) and some interesting people (Hello, Honey Boo Boo Child, and also not to be forgotten, Honey Boo Boo Child’s Mom).  There are, however, a few things that we’d like to see stay behind in 2012 and not follow us into a glorious, shiny new 2013.

1) Flashmobs

We’re over you.  Okay, in theory, these things could be really cool.  I wouldn’t mind rolling into Grand Central Station and seeing a group of strangers sing and dance along to a Ke$ha song.  HOWEVER, these are now mostly really bad and embarrassing.  Middle aged women singing and dancing to Miley Cyrus?  Yeeeesh.

Here’s one that I like from three years ago.  Let’s let them win the flashmob award and retire everyone else’s attempts for 2013.

2) Chris Brown and Rihanna

I was hoping they’d fallen off the map by now, but between controversial Twitter photos and outrageous Twitter fights, they’re stillllll heeeeeeere.  MamaPop’s Molly wants us to stop mothering Rihanna.  I concur, and also I’m cursing myself for thinking that “diamonds” song is so catchy.  SHOOT.

LOUD NOISES. FLASHING LIGHTS. Whatever gets your attention, Press. I gots it.

3) Twinkies

I know fighting about Twinkies has become a thing on the internet, and somehow we’re all blaming Obama for this (because that SO TOTALLY makes sense!), however, may I just ask: who the heck actually eats Twinkies, anyway??

4) Psy’s “Gangnam Style”

A dance miming riding a horse?  Viral in 2012.  I hate to put this on the list, but I suppose it must be done.  At over one billion views, I guess it’s safe to say that South Korea won the internet this year.  One last time, with feeling:

5) Political fights on Facebook & Twitter

The election is over.  Obama won.  I’m hoping now that 2013 will bring sanity to what Facebook probably should be – frivolity and weird “click ‘like’ and Mark Zuckerberg will give one lucky person one million dollars” photo shares.

LOL, I’m going to write in a vote for Vladimir Putin.

6) Jersey Shore

I’ve been able to skate by through life never seeing an episode, but since I’m a human and I don’t live in Amish Country or under a rock, I KNOW ENOUGH.  And I know enough to know that I think 2013 will be just fine without orange skin tones and shellacked hair.

And finally, the one pop culture thing from 2012 that I can’t say goodbye to?

Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”

I know. But I can’t – CANNOT – give it up just yet.  Sorry, but I’m not sorry.  I mean, just LOOK at Carly Rae Jepsen singing with the Roots and Jimmy Fallon.  The Roots and Jimmy Fallon instantaneously make something cool.  I… can’t quit you:

Plus, it’s the soundtrack to one of my favorite internet pranks ever.

It happened on Chatroulette, a website known for being, well.. a little amateur pr0ny. (Warning, if you want to make friends on the internet, this may not be the best way to do it.) Guys perhaps expecting to make connections with ladies over the internetz were by Steve Kardynal and… well, this:

What are you glad to leave behind in 2012? And what thing (or things) do you refuse to let go of just yet? (You’re totally with me with “Call Me Maybe,” right?)

Two things. I think ever one of those I would gladly say goodbye to and I agree that no one should say goodbye to call me maybe just yet, it is too cute.

    • Roo Ciambriello

It’s super cute! And the Roots make everything awesome.

    • Amelinda

Can’t say goodbye to Gangnum style yet – it makes me smile, particularly how many people gamely tried to do it this year – it is a bit of a unifier. So it stays.. . for me. And I so crush on Jimmy Fallon – almost anything he does is a keeper.

    • Roo Ciambriello

I want to go see his show live, badly.

I concur with all-but I’m also over Call Me Maybe. Mostly due to the fact that its overplayed on the KidzBop station. “Blue jeans, smile was showing…” Wait – that’s not how it goes.

    • Roo Ciambriello

Hahaha we have that, too. I actually like that they clean up the lyrics.

  • Ingrid

Oh my gosh, this chatroulette video made my life. So funny!

I truly love Call Me Maybe… Hey, haters gonna hate, you know what I’m sayin?

I think of Zombieland every time someone talks about Twinkies. Seriously, who ate those?! Gross. I will miss the commercial where the bear thinks the camper is a Twinkie hahaha.
I’m over FB, it sucks. Ever since Zuckerberg sold his soul to wal mart. Boooo.
