Dress Like Your Television: Rachel Berry On ‘Glee’

Say what you want about Fox‘s Gleeand trust me, I have said many, many colorful things about it often—but this show has some serious style. Every single one of the major players—Emma Pillsbury, Quinn Fabray, Kurl Hummel, Brittany S. Pierce—has a unique and distinct style. But Rachel Berry, McKinley High’s original wannabe Barbra Streisand with the perfect fringe bangs, has always stood at the forefront of this show with her schoolgirl, sexy librarian look.

This one:

Think: plaid, pleated miniskirt, crisp white blouse, knee-his and cardigan.

(Think: Britney Spears in the “Baby One More Time” video.)

Now, this looked great and worked for Lima, Ohio high-school student Rachel Berry, but season 4 saw Miss Berry moving to New York City to start a new college life with a new, more grown-up look.

She has kept a lot of the same “Rachel” signature pieces—including the bangs—but she has seriously updated and sexified her wardrobe by adding sleeker silhouettes, fitted blazers and wool pea coats, colorful peplums, and adorable patterned short shorts. Her skirts are a little less schoolgirl, her vintage-inspired dresses are a little less a-line.

She’s still very girl next door—I mean, she hasn’t lost the flats and knee-his or the Peter Pan collars and pleats—but now she’s  one that you just might want to keep away from your boyfriend.

Rachel’s style is easy to copy, and the Glee wardrobe department does an impressive job of dressing her in pieces that a New York City teenager-on-a-budget (or, say, a suburban mom like me) might be able to afford. Sure, she’s got some pricey pieces in there, but many of her tops, skirts, and shoes can be found at stores like Urban Outfitters, Modcloth, and Forever 21.

Rachel’s look is cute, but a bit too young for me, although I have appreciated them putting her in more sophisticated clothes since her move to NYC. I like that Stella top and might even have bought it, but alas! No longer available.

Oh balls. I really wanted to buy that shirt too. Boo!
