Big Love Recap

Ep_18_08You know, last week, when I predicted that PFWA would be sabotaged, I didn't think I needed to mention Margene in my "on notice" list. But, amazingly, her over-enthusiasm and Bill's fuzzy connection to the Holy Spirit seems to have
ended things...at least for now.

Also, I hate Rhonda. So much.

Things were obviously going too well. Bill and Ana are officially dating, meeting for some Greek dancing at some summer fair and kissing over SnoCones. Aww. The purchase of Weber Gaming also seems to be looking up as Bill has somehow managed to score a boat out of the deal. New wife! New boat! Yay!

Heather and Sarah head to Heather's house after work and are surprised to find Rhonda sitting with Heather's parents and talking to a reporter and April Blessing, the youth advocate who, despite her best intentions, is messing everything up and is totally sucked in by Rhonda. I appreciate the fact that April was traumatized by polygamy and wants to create awareness, but she's obviously just discriminating against all polygamists and, you know, that's just not cool. Anyway, Sarah and Heather are alarmed by Rhonda's media attention and when they ask her about what she said to the reporter, Rhonda insists that the Henrickson's are safe. She also mentions that Heather's parents, "Aunt Laura and Uncle Chuck" are planning on obtaining custody of Rhonda. Heather and Sarah are dumbstruck, but I said, "AUUUGGGHHHH NOOOOOOOOO!" for them.

Bill and Don make up after their disagreement over Weber Gaming. Bill gives Don a small Abraham Lincoln statue, saying that Abe held things together during a time of great change and that he knew he couldn't do it alone. Don is touched, which is sweet. But wait. Bill is Abe Lincoln? Or is Don? And does Weber Gaming represent slavery? Eh? The pair give each other solemn, respectful looks and Don states the obvious which is that the purchase is a big move and he can't approach it without caution. Don should write "caution" in huge letters all over Bill's office, because it's obviously a foreign concept to him.

Margene is back at the diner with her kids to visit PFWA. Ana tells Margene about her new boyfriend and Margene advises her against fooling around with the new guy until she knows what she wants out of the relationship. Ana is like, "Okay...yeah. Thanks for the tip," but invites Margene to do something selfish and decadent with her on her day off, saying that Margene is her best friend in Utah. Aww...too bad she's stupidly being not at all forthcoming with you and this will all be very awkward when you find out who Margene is married to.

At his prayer group/polygamy tech support session, Bill ponders his impulsive decision to remove his wedding ring. Everyone is very reassuring though, and says that Bill should bring Ana into the fold while listening for guidance from the Holy Spirit and not partaking in any sampling of the goods. Nudge nudge.

Ben and Brynn are doing the exact opposite, somehow managing to sneak to Ben's room in order to partake in some of the old in-out in-out. They seem to be getting pretty good at it. I still have nightmares about their first time. God, but that was awkward.

A newly licensed-to-drive Ben goes to visit the bishop at his old church, where he confesses that he's been having sex a lot with his girlfriend and doesn't think he can stop. The bishop's chief concern is that the girlfriend isn't Mormon, thereby preventing a Temple marriage. Way to set the boy's mind at ease, dude. He sends him off with some pamphlets, including one entitled, "Satan's Thrust." Hee.

Ana has Bill over for a dinner of cheese puffs and boiled meat (ew) and is visibly uncomfortable when Bill says grace before eating. Ana explains that she's not religious and somehow this seems to make Bill uneasy. But...wasn't Margene not really religious either? During the night, some shady characters show up at the Henrickson's house and torch the new boat. Don is pretty well convinced Roman was behind it, which is a pretty fair guess on his part, but Bill isn't too sure.

The next day, everyone is surprisingly not at all freaked out about the fact that someone set fire to a boat in their driveway and Nicki gets a phone call from a reporter who has some salacious questions to ask. Nicki tells off the reporter, saying that Rhonda finagled her way into her father's good graces. She hangs up and Barb asks why she didn't find out where Rhonda is. Nicki responds, "Because I don't care!" As you shouldn't either, Barb. SHE'S EVIL.

Margene is hanging out at Ana's house and they're partaking in some good ol' girl talk. Margene suddenly blurts out that she's a polygamist. Ana is intrigued but understanding and is touched by how happy Margene is when she talks about her family. Aw. Back at the house, Margene invites Nicki and Barb to go to lunch at the diner with her. Ergh. Settle down, Margene!

Bill goes to Ana's house with a most romantic gift: a water filter. This sets her afire and they furiously make out to some Avril Lavigne (barf). Bill tells her that he needs to back off on the sexy and then notices that Ana has another bouquet of flowers. Ana tells him about her girlfriend Margene. Back at home, Bill tells Margene to back off. Margene pouts, saying that maybe the Holy Spirit is speaking to her. And Bill looks at her kind of sideways and asks, "Is it?" like he might spot a little angel on Margene's shoulder.

Nicki confronts April Blessing after Rhonda's news story comes out and they have some weird, "My polygamist compound is better than your polygamist compound," discussion. April insists that Nicki will never her get her plural marriage hands on Rhonda again. Instead of saying, "Good!" Nicki goes over to Heather's house and splashes a good dose of crazy talk on Rhonda, saying that she can get Rhonda on TV via Bill's TV station. Nicki, just walk away. Seriously. Rhonda responds by screaming and saying that Nicki is trying to kidnap her. HATE. Nicki shows up for lunch at the diner where she chastises Ana for not stressing to the kitchen that she hates celery and did not want it on her sandwich. Margene is bummed that Ana didn't manage to instantly charm the sister wives. Ana's sweet, Margene, but you're kind of a sucker. Chill out.

At Heather's house, Heather's father (Norm from Fargo!) pulls Sarah aside and says all kinds of awful things to her, like that one of her "mothers" tried to kidnap poor, innocent Rhonda and that apparently Rhonda has told him about extensive abuse in the Henrickson household, alluding to molestation of the children. Sarah is understandably devastated and goes to her mom in tears. Poor kid. Barb goes to Heather's house to set Chuck straight, pointing out that as a teacher she has worked with law enforcement on child abuse cases and that what Chuck has done is beyond unprofessional. Barb asks for a word with Rhonda, and tells the evil brat that she can't keep lying to get what she wants. Rhonda gives Barb a sickeningly sweet hug, then tells her to kiss off. HATE YOU HATE YOU HATE YOU. Before slamming the door in Barb's shocked face, Chuck tells her to keep Sarah away from Heather because he doesn't want his daughter's moral judgment to be compromised. OH MY GOD HATE YOU TOO HATE YOU TOO HATE YOU TOO.

Bill goes to the diner to break things off with Ana, because he doesn't think it's the Holy Spirit attracting him to her but rather, uh, Little Bill. Ana has to work so Bill goes to leave but finds that his tire has been slashed. An appropriately creepy white van pulls up and is opened to reveal Selma Green who tells Bill that Hollis needs to speak with him. The van takes Bill to what has to be the worst compound ever, which is in some warehouse. Everyone there is one step away from wearing tinfoil hats. For the record, I don't remember these people ever being mentioned before. Who are they? Anyway, Hollis is some sort of Mormon gangster, and threatens to brand Bill for his interest in Weber Gaming. Bill blurts out that Weber was being purchased for Roman as he's on the UEB board now. The Greens lay off, but Bill now has a minor problem: he's allied himself with Roman mere days after finally wrestling free of him. Yargh!

Bill returns to his car and spots Margene and Ana having a heart-to-heart. Margene apparently thinks that if Ana will just learn to pray, everything will be fine in Bill's mind. Bill calls Margene and explains that he doesn't think things are right for Ana. Margene is bummed.

Ya, I don't think the Mormons are into killing people either, so thats probably out. I can't stand that girl!!!!

I don't think we have seen the last of Ana though, but I don't think she is meant to be the fourth.

And the Hollis clan really freaked me out - they were like something out of a horror movie!

Mandy

Gosh I love this show! Are you going to be doing a recap on Weeds by chance? My husband works for Comcast and his last day is Friday so no more free internet and cable. :( Please do Weeds so I don't miss out!

Liz

Hate Rhonda. Haaaaaaaaaaate.

Suzy Q

Loe your recaps. Hate Rhonda. Have no idea who those Green people are, either. I just assumed I had missed something along the way. Margene. Sigh.

veronica

I soooo love Margene. She just gets so excited over things and just loves life...so freakin' cute! I felt so bad for her when things with Ana didn't work out...and the look on Niki's face when Bill told her to maybe do some fun things with her...priceless! It's as if the concept of fun is totally foreign to her.

oh yea....HATE HATE HATE Rhonda also!
