MamaPop Recommends: Kelly's Picks For August

Recommended Song or Album: Daveigh Chase performing "The Happiest Girl in the U.S.A." from Big Love. I keep finding myself singing this. Chase's rendition of this country classic is so gorgeous and kind of haunting. The original version is much more to-the-point and happy and has an "aw, shucks," quality to it, but Chase's version comes at the end of a particularly emotional episode in which all of the main female characters are awash in loneliness and confusion. It sounds especially wistful coming from the character of Rhonda, whose devious tendencies have left her very much alone, despite having many people around who claim to care for her. When Chase belts out "I love you," in the middle of the song with such yearning, I always get chills.

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt Comes Out Of Hiding!

Finally heading out with the rest of her family, Shiloh joined the Jolie-Pitt clan (sans dad Brad Pitt) in the petting zoo at Central Park today. More cutie pics after the jump.

28 Months Later: Snakes on a Plane

Okay, so maybe more like 12 months later. But either way, the Hottest Internetty Meme Movie of Ever has finally hit HBO, which means Amy, the Least Cool and With-It Person on the Planet has finally seen it.

First, let me tell you: I was INTO the SoaP joke. I thought it was HILARIOUS. I could not WAIT to see the movie and ALMOST bought a t-shirt and I devoted A LOT OF CAPS LOCK TIME TO THIS MOVIE.

And then I never actually saw the movie, because we'd need to pay a babysitter. And good lord, that's a lot of money to spend on a bad movie. Even an awesomely bad movie.

But! It's on HBO! And I was very excited! Snakes on a Plane! Exclamation Points on a Blog! Oh hell, this joke will never get old. Like lolcats.

Recommended TV Show: Entourage
Its sort of the underappreciated gem of the HBO televisual canon (well and The Wire of course -- but don't even get me started on that). If you haven't yet had the pleasure, think Sex & The City for dudes. And with a whole lot of weed and Insider's Hollywood-type shenanigans. What could be better? That's right: NOTHING. Start from the beginning and rent the first season on DVD -- you won't be disappointed, promise.

RIP, Richard Jewell

Remember this guy?  He had his 15 minutes of fame and then some, after being falsely accused in the Atlanta Olympic Park bombing in 1996.  Sadly, he passed away Wednesday.  He died quietly at his home, apparently of natural causes.  He was only 44, and left behind his wife of six years.

The Atlanta news gave Jewell's death a lot of coverage on Wednesday and Thursday.  WSB-TV in Atlanta has lots of coverage of Jewell on their website.  One thing I was glad to learn was that he was honored by Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue last year for his heroic actions during the attack. Jewell sued several of the news organizations that crucified him back in 1996, and he settled out of court with CNN and NBC. At least one other lawsuit is still pending.  Personally, I hope he cashed in big time.
