Dan Rather Suing CBS for $70 Million

Danrather_2Good for him.

The former CBS Evening News anchor left his spot in 2005 after months of controversy, as explained in this story from CNN:

Rather narrated the September 2004 report that claimed President Bush skirted some of his duties during his National Guard service and that a commander felt pressured to sugarcoat Bush's record. Rather maintains the story was true.

But an independent review for the network determined the story was neither fair nor accurate. CBS fired three news executives and a producer for airing it.

He is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.  Rather's lawsuit claims CBS intentionally mis-handled the fall-out from the story, and that he was made a scapegoat.

He names the network, as well as top execs Les Moonves, Sumner Redstone, and Andrew Heyward in the suit.  He does not, however, name Katie Couric, who has driven Rather's former newscast into the ground since taking over the anchor desk in September 2006.
