Louis C.K. (nyah nyah nyah)
I am counting the minutes until this day is over because tonight I am going to see Louis C.K. perform! I know Louis has been mentioned here on MamaPop before, but it bears repeating that this guy is definitely one my favorite comedians of all time...
C.K. is probably most recognized for his collaborations with Chris Rock, most notably his Emmy-award-winning writing for The Chris Rock Show and his direction of the Rock feature film Pootie Tang, which is actually pretty hilarious and goofy if you ever get a chance to see it.
But what really endeared C.K. to me was his short-lived HBO original series Lucky Louie. The show was set as a traditional, live-audience family sitcom, but was so blunt and funny and raunchy. Many people didn't know what to think of it and it was consequently canceled. But C.K. and his fellow cast members were able to nail so many moments of family life when the members of the family are all self-deprecating and completely unsure of what they're doing. There were so many moments that struck me dumb because it was like they were lifted directly out of my life and played on the screen for me. Lucky Louie, goofy as it was, really helped me to laugh through some troubling stuff. I miss that show so much.
Not long after the show was canceled, HBO aired C.K.'s one-hour comedy special Shameless. The special touched on many of the same topics covered in Lucky Louie, but C.K. added his own misanthropic brand of personal depth to them. I can't recommend his work enough. Both Lucky Louie and Shameless are available on DVD on Amazon and are really worthwhile investments. Here's a taste:

You will LOVE his show. I've seen his HBO show and special and have heard him on several radio shows. I went to his show in Nashville a month and a half ago, and I hadn't heard any of the jokes that he told. He even had a joke about the Hermitage. Now that takes real comedic talent.

I didn't care for Lucky Louie. It struck me like high school play practice, and was kinda depressing to watch. The episode I saw was not funny at all - his daughter was being a monster and the wife kept giving in. I wanted to slap the kid AND the parents, just for being annoying. It was a bad show.

love him. Got into him when Jim Norton (my fav comedian), also in Lucky Louie, brought him on the Opie and Anthony show which I listen to religiously.
He's hysterical.
