Bat Boy: The Musical

Batboy

MamaPop readers in the DC-area, take note: You have only two more chances to catch Bat Boy: The Musical (tonight and tomorrow) at DCAC.

What? You didn't know someone had written a musical about the (now defunct) Weekly World News' favorite misunderstood mutant? Oh, yeah. Check it out:

Bat Boy first appeared in the Weekly World News in June 1992, and over the years, his travails have become the stuff of cult legend. He took cops on a three-state car chase (driving a sporty Mini Cooper, of course), led U.S. troops to Saddam Hussein's underground lair, and even ran for governor of California.

Although his adventures have now come to an end, Bat Boy lives on in his namesake musical, which was written in 2000 by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, with a score by Laurence O'Keefe.

As Bat Boy tries to find a place outside his cave in the human world, the musical explores some serious themes of conformity and acceptance, which are all the more potent for their campy veneer.

Apparently the musical has quite the cult following and has been staged lots of places, so if you don't live near DC, don't fret. I'm sure you'll have a chance to catch this show eventually (if you haven't already).

Anyone out there already see it? Is it any good? Is it campy a la Rocky Horror? Are the fans in the audience rabid (bad joke)? Do we learn whether Bat Boy was in any way related to the bat that Dwight trapped on Meredith's head on The Office?

Saw it in Memphis. Loved it. Recommended it to lots of people. They all walked out at intermission.

I saw it in NYC about 6 years ago. I almost peed my pants it was so funny- but you have to go into it expecting major camp. The woman next to me had no sense of humor at all, which just made me laugh harder.

I truly enjoy moments like that, Jenn- you made me laugh just imagining it.

I went this evening. Actually, it wasn't campy *enough*, and I walked out during intermission. Go figure!

Our high school performed it several years ago. It was...well, a bit racy. Let's just say it ain't The Music Man.

Maybe it depends upon how it's staged. It was the radical swan song of the outgoing drama teacher. It was a HUGE controversy in our community.
