Have You Ever Smelled Mothballs?
How do you get their little legs apart?
Hehehehe...
Have you ever dreamed of creating the finest knitted couture for the creepy-crawlies in your life? While I am inclined to think that knitting such intricate and detailed items for a cockroach or centipede is, well, stark raving bonkers, there is something about these pictures of Althea Merback's "Bug Knits" collection that I find absolutely fascinating. I'll admit it. I think they're quite exquisite.
Merback, a mom from Bloomington Indiana, has developed quite the cottage industry around miniature knits, and has recently knitted outfits for the entire cast of next year's animated film Coraline, directed by Henry Selick (who did The Nightmare Before Christmas).
More bug knits after the jump...
I like a bit of knitting. I specialize in all things square or oblong--scarves, blankets, keyboard cosies. Though I have ventured into the world of knitting patterns, I am much happier avoiding tricky and challenging things like, oh, sleeves, and collars, and fiddly bits like that. However, if I was approached to knit for a troop of insects or some claymation miniatures, I might just step up to the task. As long as there were no cables involved.
What do you think of them? (and what would Warhol think?)

Wow. The mind boggles.
But I love the little undersea jacket. And those teeny gloves.

Hmmm ... cute but I have trouble keeping myself and the kids properly dressed. If I had to start making clothing for the insects in my life (hoping there are few), I just might throw myself off a bridge!
