Will "Damages" Leave Us Hanging?
I watched the season finale of Damages last night under the naive assumption that, since it was billed as a "season finale", it would be back for another season in a few months. Silly me.
Spoiler alert for what comes after the jump.
While the finale was satisfying in that it brought closure to several of the plot lines (charges against Ellen were dropped, David was buried), it left a few doors open (is Frobisher really dead? what's the deal with Patty's daughter?). And, as a set-up for the second season, the writers left us with the beginning of a new story line. By the end of last night's episode, I was ready to start a countdown to the new season of Damages.
So imagine my surprise this morning when I read this from the LA Times:
Indeed, FX has not committed to renewing the show and I don't quite know how to come to terms with this...."Damages" is the kind of good, old-fashioned drama that requires a viewer to pay attention and think. It doesn't rely on polar bears or superpowers or quirky back stories and pie references to hold your interest. It sticks with great storytelling and superb acting. It's television for smart people.
Like the LA Times writer, I can't understand why more people aren't watching this. And I will be heartbroken if it's not renewed. I've seen too many great, smart shows fade away after just one season (or less). I'd like to see this one stick around for a while longer.

I don't know this show, but I hope it doesn't go the way of Dead Like Me. Season three ended with the promise of season four and then *kapoof* Showtime no renew-y. Ba$tards.

This show is fantastic. I can't believe that it might not be renewed.

Maxine - I heard that Dead Like Me (one of my most favoritists shows ever) ended because Mandy Patankin wanted to move back to regular cable/network and pursue something a little more mainstream. Sigh.

Dead Like Me fans, I happened to notice on IMDB yesterday that they're making a DLM movie. Most of the actors, minus Mandy Patinkin and Laura Harris, seem to be involved.

I liked how they tied up season one and also hope they pick Damages up for at least another season. My only problem was the "Alias-like" feel to how they were planning on going into the possible season 2. Alias remains one of my top 5 favorite shows and Damages seemed to suck some of the basics out of it (fiance killed, view of your job changes because you figure out what is really going on, boss almost killing you, covert work to bring down boss, etc). I am also in law school so it is interesting to watch from that perspective.
