Secretly Lovin' it.
It's no secret that I hate McDonald's. I have been overcome by temptation a couple of times over the last 10 years. The first time, well, let's just say that I wasn't of a sound mind. I was a vegetarian and ordered a cheeseburger, declaring that they don't use real meat. The second time I was 2 months pregnant. I left the gym and went straight to McDonald's as my reward. I ordered two egg and cheese biscuits and a hash brown. My hands nearly slipped off my steering wheel on the way home. It was awesome.
But relatively speaking, I am not fan of McDonald's. If I had my way, I'd vote them off the island of Manhattan (and everywhere else for that matter) starting tomorrow right after I order an egg and cheese biscuit.
I have a 4-month-old at home. My husband and I have already put ideals in place. Our son will go to a Quaker school. Our son will learn a foreign language (or two). Our son will play sports and have the coolest bike on the block. Our son will go to the college of his choice. Our son will never, ever consume McDonald's on our dime. I believe that nothing good can come from McDonald's.
A couple of weeks ago (Or maybe it was last month? I don't have a very firm grasp of time anymore now that we have a baby) Charlie Brown's Christmas was on. As one might expect from the corporate monster, not four minutes into the show, McDonald's started with their brainwashing. At first I was appalled. But then the commercial kept going and we simply could not take our eyes away from the television. It was the single most compelling ad I have seen in years.
The best part about the ad is just how perfectly nerdy the little kid is. It's a good thing we taped it, too, because I have watched this ad probably a dozen times. It's seriously one of the best ads I've seen on TV.
So, to all the powers who wish to make it so that DVR users can no longer fast forward through commercials, I propose this: air ads that are so compelling people rewind and rewatch endlessly. I can't stand McDonald's yet I watched that ad over and over again.
I keep telling myself that I'm keeping Charlie Brown's Christmas to watch it over again. But I think we all know the truth.
