Spanx Donned, Teeth Vaselined as Red Carpet Season Commences
Screenwriter Diablo Cody, left, showed off her retro girlie tattoos with Juno star Ellen Page at the Palm Springs International Film Festival awards gala Saturday night. Permanent ink lover Drew Barrymore presented an award to the film's cast, gushing "When I first saw this movie . . . I couldn't stop crying". Because Michael Cera's still underage? Meanwhile . . .
. . . Daniel Day-Lewis tenderly accepted a deflated beach ball at the apex of the event, a jolly hotbed of mildly cheerful pre-Golden Globe back-slapping fun. Sean Penn won director of the year and Day-Lewis and a tastefully bulbous Halle Berry won best actor awards, setting off some unparalleled log-rolling, as reported in the Sunday Desert Sun (after the jump):
"With the exception of Sean, who is the best actor directing movies, I consider [Daniel Day-Lewis] the best actor doing it," said "Blood" director Paul Thomas Anderson.
Penn, bearded and wearing an unbuttoned suit coat, then called Anderson a liar. "Daniel Day-Lewis," he said, "may very well be the greatest actor ever recorded on the screen."
Day-Lewis, meanwhile, was busy building a yurt and cobbling his own shoes at the end of the buffet.
[More photos of the event, including evidence that Sean Penn is now officially a disoriented French intellectual, can be found here.]

I love Daniel Day-Lewis...as an actor and a crazy not-so-old coot.

Much respect for DD-L. He looks genuinely happy in the event photos, too.

Ah hah! But Michael Cera is not underage! He is 19 years and 7 months old! (Like, exactly that old- his 20th birthday is 5 months from today.)

Underage to drink! Good heavens, what did you think I was talking about!
