Drew And That Mac Guy Are Awfully Cute Together!
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long have been dating since last summer, apparently! Which is kind of exciting because he seems pretty normal and NORMAL IS GOOD, DREW. NO MORE KOOKY, ONE-MONTH-LONG MARRIAGES FOR YOU.
In the meantime, Barrymore is directing her first movie so hold onto your helmets! Judging by its star and a brief plot outline, it's going to be a doozy.
The film is called "Whip It" and it takes place outside of Austin, Texas, where a bored teenage misfit, played by "Juno" star Ellen Page, finds the purpose of life when she joins a roller derby squad. I think the last roller derby movie I saw was "Kansas City Bomber" starring Raquel Welch, and one wonders why the subject of women's competitive roller games hasn't been turned into art since then? Perhaps Ms. Welch played the role so definitively that everyone just threw up their hands and said ROLLER DERBY, LIKE THE TROJAN WAR, HAS FOUND ITS HOMER, THE STORY NEED NOT BE TOLD AGAIN.
That's how Hollywood works, you know, everyone digging deep for ancient wisdom!
Page sums it up nicely when she says, "I can’t wait to kick ass on wheels!”
Check out this original trailer for "Kansas City Bomber," it will really get you in the mood. And see if you don't say "OH SHIT!" about eight times while you're watching it.
Also, here's that list of roller skating movies that you needed for your life to be complete.

For my money it's Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. NOT THAT THAT HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH ROLLER SKATING.

Dating the Mac guy (who actually I mostly still think of as Brandon, the nerdiest nerd to ever watch Galaxy Quest), reading one of my favorite books, and directing Ellen Page in a movie about roller derby?
I think Drew is my new hero.

This plot, and tagline, also explain the birth of "Highlander" movies and TV series. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.
