New Orleans: America's Hoo-Ha

Hey, don't look at me, I'm not the one who said it.

Jane Fonda's been all over the internet today for dropping the c-bomb during an interview with Meredith Vieira this morning on Today.  She and Eve Ensler were on to discuss The Vagina Monologues, and Jane mentioned that she'd been asked to do a monologue with the word "c*nt" in the title - of course, she said it without the asterisk (I'm not sure how it's pronounced with the asterisk, now that I think about it... hmm...).  Twenty minutes later, Vieira came back on and apologized on behalf of Fonda and the show.

Slightly less internet attention has been given to Eve calling New Orleans "the vagina of America," and Jane responding with, "“Think about it. It's moist, it's a wetland, it's a place where people come for fun. And when things go south, forget about it.”

Heh.  Okay, I laughed.  I wonder if I'd have been as amused if I were from New Orleans.  Not that there's anything wrong with being a vagina.  Mine says to tell you her job is quite enjoyable, in fact.

Happy V-Day, betches!

I laughed and I'm in New Orleans... so what does that make me? Okay anyway...

The "vagina of America" comment refers to this year's Spotlight Speech in the Vagina Monologues, "Welcome to the Wetlands." It celebrates New Orleans, the Gulf South, and the the Katrina Warriors (http://www.katrinawarriors.net/).

(If I sound like an advertisement, it's probably because I'm in my university's production of the Vagina Monologues this year and we're supposed to remind all of our friends to come see it; the urge to advertise is a hard one to avoid.)

The Cunt monologue is about reclaiming the word, so I wish they hadn't apologized, but offered an explanation. I mean, it starts with "I call it cunt. I've reclaimed it. Cunt. I really like it." It may be offensive because people don't like the word, but it's not about offending people. It's about the way the word sounds and how much that person loves it.

Oh good lord, it's not like Fonda used the C-word to swear. Too many eggshells up in the Today Show's mofo.

I agree, Maxine. If she'd called someone a cunt, that might be one thing, but she was just repeating the title of a monologue. I happen to kind of like the word, but I'm careful about its use, since I know not everyone feels similarly.

"the vagina of America," and Jane responding with, "Think about it. It's moist, it's a wetland, it's a place where people come for fun. And when things go south, forget about it."

is she saying what I'm thinking, which is that got f*cked pretty hard?

Anna, no worries! I think it's a great thing, so advertise away. :)
