Rock The Cradle: The Beginnings

Rock_the_cradle_week_1

With nine young wannabe stars trying to "take over the family business" by becoming stars in their own rites, Rock The Cradle was bound to be either a trainwreck or the best new reality show on television. Add into that all the parents of these young stars, who will not only be in the audience for each performance but are all famous musicians themselves. So how did it go? Well, the parents clearly wanted their own tv time, and the kids are all definitely spoiled. And the judges? Belinda Carlisle, choreographer/director Jamie King, stylist June Ambrose and manager Larry Rudolph (what?!?!?). Totally rockin.

So what happened? Keep reading to find out.

First of all, now it makes so much more sense that gossip on the street is that Britney's back with Larry Rudolph. If he's judging a reality show, of COURSE people are trying to get these two back together! That aside, the show pretty much rocked. The wannabes got to pick a song that represented their relationship with their parents, and it was super telling!

The kids all performed pretty much the way you'd expect them to. All the "behind the scenes footage" of them shows them to be just as spoiled as you'd expect them to, and they all performed to a large degree of success. My pick for the winner at this point? Joe Walsh's daughter. Her voice was amazing, she had a ton of personality on stage, and other than getting some style criticism (which I'd have given her too for that purple thing she was wearing) she was pretty much the deal. Lucy, you have my vote! If Lucy doesn't win, I'd vote for MC Hammer's daughter A'Keiba Burrell . My only issue with her song was that she could pigeonhole herself by singing Broadway so soon.

The biggest issue these kids have? Their style leaves SO MUCH to be desired. With all the money their parents have and all the access they have to wardrobe stylists? You'd think they'd have done so much better in that department. Ah well. There's seven weeks for them to figure it out.

So, while we wait for next week, when we find out who gets kicked off first, here's a behind the scenes video of Lil B Sure with MC Hammer.

I totally agree with your synopsis of the show last night. My top four picks are...
Lucy Walsh, A'Keiba Burrell, Crosby Loggins, and Jesse Snider. Some had the vocals, some had the stage presence, but I can't say that any of them as that "it" factor just yet. Lucy was my favorite though.

Okay, I have a lot of opinions about this show, so please allow the succession of brain farts about to follow...

Obviously, I'm watching the show, so even though I'm about to belch out my opinions, you'll also see I'm quite skilled at contradicting myself. ;)

I find it ironic that several of these kids claim they want to be successful without riding on their parents' coat tails. Isn't that exactly what this show is about? If they were just the average, non-celeb-child, wouldn't they be trying to get noticed the old-fashioned way? Or on American Idol? When I think of celebs who were very determined to make it without help from their famous last name, I think of Nicholas Cage (last name: Coppola) and Angelina Jolie (Voight).

Lucy Walsh was good. But I felt that she was REALLY using daddy's name. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Eagles, but was it necessary to mention repeatedly who her dad is? That he's a member of the #1 most famous American band in history? Etc? And then, for her to pick a Don Henley (daddy's bandmate) song...? Hmmm... She said that she felt the chorus described her relationship with her dad. If that's true, how very sad. It's my favorite Don Henley song ever, but that doesn't change the fact that the chorus says "I think it's about forgiveness...even if YOU DON'T LOVE ME ANYMORE." Other words include: "I'm learning to live without you now." Her dad is still in her life. Anyway - sorry for the rant. I love that song, but the very reason I love it is because it helped me through a tough break-up - definitely nothing to do with my daddy.

As far as actual rock 'n' roll...I, surprisingly, like Jesse Snider. He had an amazing stage presence, energy, comfort, and was definitely going for the classic rocker style. Yes, he needs to work on his voice, but as I said before, he was the most rock 'n' roll.

I was bummed Kenny Loggins wasn't there. I hope he is on future shows. It was said that Joe Walsh wasn't there due to touring, and at least Kenny Loggins was interviewed on tape...but anyone know why he wasn't there?

Not sure how I feel about the judges, except to say that they're very inconsistent. I was surprised how quickly they threw out such high scores right off the bat, with Eddie Money's daughter. And then the scores fell to crap for the next few performancs. Eddie Money's daughter was okay - I just didn't think she was as great as the judges thought.

Of course, this is coming from me, who is not a celeb, doesn't have any skills whatsoever on a stage, etc. ;)
