Heather Mills and Paul McCartney Offically Divorced, Kind Of
After all that, it took 30-seconds. On Monday, Justice Hugh Bennett said the petition for divorce by Mills was granted
on the grounds that the couple had lived apart for two years. The hearing took a half of a minute, and was not attended by either Paul or Heather.
Bennett said: "On the petition for divorce presented by Miss Heather Mills, I pronounce the decree nisi of divorce on the grounds of two years' separation. Sir Paul McCartney has consented to the decree being granted on these grounds."
An explanation as to why the divorce is really not official yet is after the jump.
What is kind of odd is that it is still not really over. Under British divorce law, the decree nisi is essentially a preliminary divorce, or what we would call a formal separation agreement. They now must wait six weeks and one day to receive a decree absolute, which ends the marriage completely. I have absolutely no idea why except sometimes, British law is weird.
According to this website:
The decree nisi is the court's decision to grant a divorce provided that nothing comes to light which may alter the judgment. The certificate given as a result of this decision shows the period of time that is to be allowed for this purpose. If nothing comes to light, the decree absolute is issued at the end of the waiting period. The decree nisi is therefore a temporary document only and the decree absolute must always be seen.
