I'm Not Buying SJP as A Sex Symbol
Authored by Super Special Guest Poster and Honorary MamaPop Betch, Sarah of Sarah And The Goon Squad
Let me ask you a serious question. Why is Sarah Jessica Parker famous? And you can't just say big boobs because my pre-algebra teacher had enormous breasts and she was never on the cover of Vogue (that I've noticed anyway.)
I also suspect my pre-algebra teacher was a better actress.
I know, I know. All of you Sex and the City fans are freaking out right now but she ruined "L.A. Story." I realize that her character was supposed to be crass but I don't think that the director intended me to want want to claw my eyes out just to feel a different kind of pain.
I think she and Kevin Costner and Keanu Reeves got together and tricked Hollywood into thinking they were legitimate actors. But at least Keanu Reeves is easy on the eyes.
So tell me - did he sell her soul to the devil? Is marrying Matthew Broderick really that big of a box office draw? Or am I missing something?
. . . . .

My guy friends call her "the prettiest of the ugly girls." I'm totally down with that.

I have loved Sarah Jessica Parker since Square Pegs and I will always love her.
When I was little I was excited that she too haad curly hair and that she managed to work it. I think she's beautiful because she's terribly average, kind of like Sandra Bullock. I feel like I could bump into her at Target, you know? I think a lot of my friends are beautiful and they're certainly not Hollywood standard Sexy.
Also, Flight of the Navigator.
Also? Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Any movie where Helen Hunt wears a giant grasshopper on her head is a keeper in my book.

I love her. Don't know why, but I do. But, I think the fact that she's the "prettiest of the ugly girls" makes me want to slap her less. The pretty actresses kinda get on my nerves and make my head particularly explody.

I love her too. I don't know why either.

The cover photo is hideous. She looks like she's about to start drooling out of her lower lip. Also? Dead eyes.
PUT DOWN the Photoshop, people!

I am a huge SATC fan. Could not be more excited about the movie. Love, love, love her.
I think it's because she is real. She is who she is. No nonsense.

I'm with you. I don't get what the big deal is with her. Like someone said... she DOES seem like someone you could run into at Target, but not like a movie star. It takes all kinds, I guess, as my grandma would say.

Also, in my opinion... she's slightly below average in the looks department. I have a feeling it takes her a while to get looking good. My goodness, why am I being so mean? I'll stop now.

In our house, she's referred to as Dee Snider's flat chested twin sister.
But she works it. I guess.
She's got a great smile.
And oh, that Family Stone movie. ...

but at least Dee Snider is funny!
i find SJP annoying as hell and wish so much that she would just go away.. i was so happy when THAT show went off the air - i had brief hopes that the madness and the surrounding insistance of 'oh you have to see it, you'll be hooked' would disappear.. but of course they had to make a movie.. i was an idiot to believe them when they said the plans were cancelled.
on family guy, Peter said 'she has a face like a foot.' i tend to agree.. although i now feel bad, both for a long post and (like Kelly said) i don't know why i'm being so mean..

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess as I've always thought she was pretty and adore her.

Wow- everyone is being so harsh! I am a big SATC fan, but SJP was never my favorite actress on the show. That being said, I think she always looks quite lovely.
I like the fact that she's not a "classic" beauty. Plus, I've seen her interviewed, and she seems like a genuine, funny, charming woman that would be a pleasure to work with. No wonder so many women worship her. I'd take her as a role model over many of the Hollywood starlets today.
And she married Ferris Buehler! How cool is that?

There are certain actresses my hubby describes as mannish - SJP is one of them. Don't get me wrong - I have no problem with her not being drop-dead gorgeous. However - due to her personality and the 'tude she's exhibited publicly here and there, I just don't think I'd ever see her at Target. She has the uppity-ness one would expect in a much more talented and attractive person. Sandra Bullock - the "girl next door" type - I could totally see at Target, because she has a sweet personality.

My theory is she is really a man in drag. Look at her nose, chin, thin hair and manhands for one. And Matthew Broderick is totally gay. It also explains her acting--a lot of her acting energy goes into simply being a woman, so not much is left. That's why she has two feminine first names, too....he couldn't decide.

Oh thank God I'm not the only one who doesn't like her!
Personally, she's probably very nice.
But watching any show/movie with her in it...sort of makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a pencil. It always seems so forced.

I don't care what you think about her personally - looks or otherwise - or if you enjoyed SATC or not. The fact remains that she's been a STAGE and screen actress since she was a small child and was on Broadway multiple times back when you actually had to have talent instead of just name recognition.
So yes, I would say you are missing something. And no, your "pre-algebra teacher" was not a better actress. Let's not confuse personal taste with professional ability.

Because she has total street cred and an incredible publicist. What? You think these things just "happen"?
Posted by: Carolyn S. | May 22, 2008 at 10:03 PM
I've always liked her. Yes, objectively speaking, she's kind of ugly...but she works it in a way that makes it seem like she's the most gorgeous woman in the room. It surprises me how many people dislike her on the basis of her looks (not just here in this post) and then we bitch because we end up with a bunch of vapid Jessica Simpson types. SJP is talented, intelligent, and graceful, and even if she's not classically good looking, she's beautiful.

And since when does SJP have big boobs?
Posted by: Kathryn | May 22, 2008 at 10:51 PM
Oh, see I just loved her as Carrie Bradshaw. I thought she was perfect to play a woman who was messy enough to relate to. And big boobs...wha..? Only when she was pregnant.

But that picture? AWFUL. People at Vogue are just mean.
Posted by: Annie | May 22, 2008 at 11:19 PM
Wow. People sure do have some strong feelings about her. I like her. I think she's cute and quirky.

You all are mean...

DianaCLT - I don't think she comes across as uppity. Especially after the launch of her new clothing line 'Bitten' I think she's proven that she's down to earth - the line is sold at Steve and Barry's and everything is 19.98 or less.
