Katherine Heigl Says "No, Thanks," to Potential Emmy Nomination

Katherine_heigl

Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl is withholding her name from this year's Emmy nominations, citing the lack of good material this year for her character, Izzy.

The LA Times noticed Heigl's name missing from the ballot and asked her to explain. Heigl answered, "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention."

Dang. It sounds like Heigl is pretty much done with Grey's Anatomy at this point and maybe the folks in charge of that show feel the same way. I can't imagine that she's too heartbroken about the possible split with network TV, with hits Knocked Up and 27 Dresses under her belt and The Ugly Truth due out next year.

I don't watch Grey's, so I can't speak to her claims. But while I'm still pissed about her comments about Knocked Up being sexist (I totally disagree with her but that's a long rant for another time) and then following it up with the neurotic spinster bullshit that was 27 Dresses, I have to say that I'm proud of her for being at least a little outspoken about the lack of good material for women in Hollywood. Note to Katherine's agent: find this lady some good roles!

Couldn't she have been more tactful and said, "Many of the Grey's fan sites have noted that I didn't have much material to work with, so...." I mean, dude, a little tact goes a long way.

Suzy Q

I like her but I thought this was a bit...um, ungrateful. Also, it sounds like she's shitting on the writers. Best hope she doesn't come across those guys/gals on any other show or movie.

jodifur

Except that she totally bites the hand that feeds her. She would be no where without Grey's.

It sounded to me like she thought she would lose anywhere. It's the equivalent of being 5 and taking your ball and going home.

Katie Kat

Dude - she kinda sounds like a BEOTCH. A little too abrasive for me!

Rebecca

Jodifur took the words right out of my mouth.

Missie

I hope Ms. Heigl and her principles are happy.

Becca

You know, when she bitched about Isaiah, I was all for it. When she bitched about "Knocked Up" I began to wonder. But this is far beyond candor. Every freaking person on every freaking show submits their name. This is incredibly bitchy of her.

JD

I love Grey's, and her character didn't have the best material, but honestly, she needs to keep her mouth shut off camera, because every time she opens it, she sounds like an arrogant, self-righteous bitch. I'm totally over her.

kdiddy

I have to say that I disagree with you guys. Heigl is under no obligations to accept the career that Hollywood is willing to give her. She can, in fact, call the shots and criticize the establishment that she operates in. I highly doubt that if she were a man she would be called a bitch for standing up for her career goals or for having principles, and it's absolutely no secret that the options for actresses are often laughable at best. Suzy Q and Jodifur, I TOTALLY AGREE with you, except that Suzy, I don't particularly like Heigl.

Kdiddy, the only thing she is under obligation for is her stint on Grey's. She's been notably trying to get herself booted from that show for ages, but she's being held to her contract. I just don't see the point in publicly (or privately for that matter) burning bridges like she does. Hollywood is a small town, and she needs to play the game a little smarter, there are ways to make your point about the roles for women that can include being tactful. The alternative is getting no work at all, so I think she could be smarter about how she makes her points.

I agree that she didn't have good material this year. And I agree that she is totally within her rights to be outspoken about it.

But I don't agree that bad writing has anything to do with her over-acted performances this year. That would have far more to do with her not getting an Emmy nom than any quality of writing. She is not an innocent victim.

And just like Barbara said, "a little tact goes a long way." Outspoken and B***h are not synonymns, but she seems to be doing her best to make them so.

rednexmama

Sooo... When Grey's Anatomy became such a big hit, I kept trying to figure out where I new Katherine Heigl from when it struck me "Romy and Michelle - In the Beginning". This is from 2005. So prentension is coming from where exactly? And frankly, if you don't like the roles? Don't play them. I get that's she's being held to contract on Grey's but... This is the same woman who bitched that marriage was just a "crapshoot" before her all-star wedding, bitched that Knocked-Up was sexist, but then stared in *cough* Romy and Michelle AND 27 Dresses?! Pretty classic spinster crap there, no? Please lady, I don't care... bitch a year from now, bitch after the show. But at least show a little respect for those on your show who may have deserved a nom by NOT drawing negative attention to them just so YOU can pretend to have standards.
