Putting The Sex Back On Showtime

Known for putting sex in its rightful place as an integral part of human life on its television shows, Showtime has taken some flack in recent years as shows such as The L Word have lost some of their steamy scenes to less necessary moments. Like dialogue. But starting this Monday night, they’re going to make up for lost time with Secret Diary Of A Call Girl!

Britain loved it, now it’s time for America to decide if it too will revel in sex work on prime time. SDCG (Secret Diary Of A Call Girl shorthand) introduces us to Belle, one of Britain’s more high-end escorts. Belle’s a girl who loves her job, although she struggles at times with balancing work and play. Belle introduces us to her life and her clientele, the ins and outs of the escort service as well as the difficult dance of keeping your job and your personal life separate. Separate names, separate wardrobes, even separate bedrooms help Hannah (Belle’s real-life name) separate herself from Belle in the off-hours.

Filled with steamy threesomes, “girlfriend experiences”, role play and even a dabble into S & M, Belle’s life is just as complicated as us “regular” working stiffs. She’s got an ex she’s still friends with, a family who has no idea her money doesn’t come from work as a legal secretary, and no real girl friends to speak of. It doesn’t take long to see Hannah isn’t as worldly as Belle would have you believe, but she sure does a great job of keeping both her employer and her clientele satisfied despite the many mishaps and missteps.

Far from a documentary-style examination of sex work in Britain, SDCG is more of a Sex and the City meets Girls Next Door type of show. And because it’s based off the popular blog Belle de Jour, I’m betting the events that seem the least plausible are the ones that are the most real!

I’d definitely set the Tivo to record this gem, but if you’re not used to Showtime’s steamy sex scene proclivities, you’d be wise to have a cold shower ready and waiting!

Plus, it has Billie Piper; what with her and all the sex, we won't get the sci-fi boys away from the telly for weeks.

I watched this last night and was a bit disappointed. It just wasn't all that interesting.
