Guys & Dolls

My son has a doll. Actually, he has several -- including a realistic-looking baby doll we bought to prepare him for his new baby brother and help reinforce lessons like Why We Don't Pick Babies Up By Their Eye Sockets -- but only one of those dolls has his heart.

Pinky Dinky Doo. That's her, over on the left there. Pinky is a character from his favorite preschooler cartoon. She tells stories, uses her imagination, solves problems, likes "big fancy words," etc.

Pinky is not a stuffed animal or an action figure. She's a doll. And she is also, in case you didn't notice, a girl.

So why do people insist on calling my son's doll a "he?"

New Bond Theme: Jack White and Alicia Keys?

I know. You are thinking I could have sworn she just said Jack White and Alicia Keys will be singing the new James Bond theme song. That woman must be on crack.

And you would be right. About the theme song anyway.

I don't know what kind of response you have to the news that, yes indeedy David, it will be a duet between the singer of The White Stripes (who I love) and Alicia

Im Not Even Going to Ask What BAWLS Tastes Like

When I was in San Francisco I had the heinous misfortune privilege of drinking a "global warming-flavored" energy drink. There wasn't any normal sort of energy drink in the hotel's expensive bar/cafe/sandwich shop. In case you're ever curious, global warming tastes like feet.

It was nice; whatever flavor drink you purchased the company would donate a portion of the sales to that particular cause. Like AIDS. There was an "AIDS-flavored energy drink" as well. It had a red label and probably tasted like cherry phosphate.

I realize that there are numerous energy drinks on the market, all competing for your dollars. Like Vitamin Water -  name which is a lot catchier than We Put A Lot of Sugar and Crap in It Water. After the AIDS drink I thought that I'd seen it all. Oh no.

Stalking Joss Whedon

It started innocently enough.

I, like many of you, recently watched Mr. Whedon's made-for-the-web musical dramedy (wait -- scratch that -- what's tragedy+comedy? Tramedy?) in three acts, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Also like many of you, I enjoyed it enormously. And like a few of you -- people I'd lovingly call My Fellow Weirdos -- it became, oh, something of a crazed obsession, something I felt compelled to watch again and again. And again. And? AGAIN.

In my case, I'd had a stupendously rough week, and Dr. Horrible served as a kind of tonic for my soul, its songs and its characters becoming somehow emblematic of my own troubles and sorrows. Dr. Horrible, as corny and cheesy as it sounds, somehow made me feel less alone during a dark and lonely hour of my life.

And then it got a little weird.

Perhaps All Oprah Winfrey Touches Does Not Turn to Gold

The former dormitory matron at Oprah Winfrey's South African school has pleaded not guilty to common assault, harassment and soliciting a minor to perform indecent acts and verbal abuse.  All of these charges arose out of incidents that occurred at the school.

"She pleaded not guilty to all the charges, they are reserving her defense, I don't know till when," said state prosecutor Etienne Venter.

HB and Meryl Streep Have a Little Chat

Oh, Meryl. My dear. My darling. My favorite chameleon-ess. Let's talk, shall we? I feel like we can have this chat because we are very similar women. Those type A, go-get-'em types who enjoy the success that ass kicking hardwork often rewards. So when I found out that you would be in the movie version of Mamma Mia! one of my favorite Broadway musicals, I kind of pissed myself a bit. While I'm sure that you would never say such a crass thing in public - aha! where we differ - I really did do a jig, because I love you! And I love ABBA in ways unfathomable! Which would mean that when putting the two together it would be a super powerful Oscar nominated musical of seventies music and pure, sparkling awesomeness. Right? Let's put it this way; the entire thing was comparable to putting salt and vinegar chips and Twizzler pull and peels in a blender: Awesome separately so of course they should join forces. WRONG.

Earthquake Stuns Judge Judy Into Silence

To all of our California-based readers and writers who experienced yesterday's earthquake, we are SO glad that you are okay.
What's the old saying? Something like, "The best cure for pooping your pants after a 5.4 earthquake is laughter?" I think Jack Kerouac wrote that. Anyway, one of the TV sets affected by yesterday's quake was Judge Judy's.

DiCE Realizes Women Can Kick Ass in Video Games, Too

The past week has been utterly dominated by nerds. First, Comic Con in San Diego, and then E3, the yearly hajj for game developers and hardcore gamers. While I am merely a casual gamer myself, I have been following news about the new EA game, Mirror's Edge, for some time now, mostly because my husband won't shut up about it.

The game is intriguing to me on many levels. Digital Solutions CE (DiCE), makers of the Battlefield series, apparently grew bored of games with big men shooting the crap out of each other, and sought to develop a first person action game virtually without guns, and with a female lead. And it looks cool as hell, y'all.

Johnny Depp's Sausage

Sigh.

One thing that always puzzled me about Johnny Depp's tenure as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of Caribbean movies was his general lack of concern over his work being translated into a merchandising juggernaut. I vaguely remember some small protests on his part but Jack Sparrow's sly grin has been plastered on every trinket imaginable. Depp always struck me as one of those actors who disdains such saturation, but I don't think anyone can deny that he was positively brilliant in the Pirates movies. Whatever nonsense we have to endure at the hands of marketing "geniuses" is but a small price to pay to hear him slur, "My peanut."
