Christian Siriano Wants Your Maternity Wear To Be Fierce

Christiansirianofashion0312080009 Anyone who loves Project Runway as much as yours truly knows that it was the "Bad Mommy" diva Laura Bennett who rocked the runway during her (SIXTH!) pregnancy back in Season 3, but now expecting fashionistas have something to look forward to in the 2009 collection of one Mr. Christian Siriano.

I think the collection looks adorable (you can see some sketches here) but I am a little befuddled as to what motivated our wee little Mango-alike to create maternity wear. I'm also hoping that this will motivate PR to do a maternity challenge, which would totally rule.

And hey, if Laura Bennett wants to try for baby #7, she has even more opportunities to not look like a hot mess. (Not that Laura ever came close to looking like a hot mess.)

So what about YOU, my precious squirrels? Would you ever buy designer maternity wear? Hit those comments!

Possibly he's hoping to cash in on the celebrity baby boom. I too wish that the beach-towel-as-maternity-dress craze would die. Possibly he's just deeply in touch with babies, as he is the approximate size of one. But when I was pregnant I was all about the elastic waistband and that is just so not fierce.

If I had the money and the time to shop, I might. I feel so gross and huge this 4th time around I would mortgage my paid-for house to feel gorgeous. An anti-gravity undershirt for my belly would be worth a few thousand. (Anyone mentioning the itchy-ass belly bra will incur my wrath.)

I cheaped out in a major big way my first pregnancy -- hand-me-downs and cheapo sale racks all the way. And I HATED the way I looked, I HATE the photos I have (the few I actually allowed, anyway), and I decided eff this, I'm not doing that again.

Sure, I've gotten some stuff at Old Navy and consignment stores and reused a lot of my clothes from last time, but I also treated myself to a few expensive things simply because I felt pretty in them. And I wear them constantly and I pose for pictures and HELL YES, they're worth every dollar. Every pregnant woman, if she can, should not feel guilty for splurging on at least a couple beautiful things.

*bites lip, wipes tear from eye, goddamn hormones*

I don't know if I would shell out the cash for designer maternity clothes since I am A) not pregnant, and B) really cheap about my day-to-day clothes, but I agree with Amy that women deserve to feel good about themselves since they have to suffer through 40 weeks of crazy biology.

Also, I snorted my soda when I read Alison's comment: "Possibly he's just deeply in touch with babies, as he is the approximate size of one." Hilarious.

I have babies that range between 10 and 12 pounds and are two feet tall at birth. By the end of my pregnancies, nothing really fits except for the Army-issued tent that my husband so thoughtfully got for me at a surplus store.

So when it comes to pregnancy wear, I know that if I buy it in the first trimester, I'll be wearing it up until the end of the second trimester, after which time I have to haul out the tent. The words "designer" and "pretty" don't really come into play when I've got one of my ginormous babies in there. Last pregnancy I gave up and wore short overalls. I just kept letting out the shoulder straps until they were begging for mercy.

But! BUT! If I had normal--i.e., cute with a normal sized bump--pregnancies, I would so be wearing cuter, prettier things. I did get one gorgeous maternity dress that made me feel just beautiful. I still have it.

I am almost 32 weeks, and I would *not* buy it. I don't have enough extra cash to justify something I will wear so infrequently (I would happily buy the knockoffs at Target, though). We are pretty casual people, so I feel decent enough in my jersey dresses and capri/tank top outfits. I'm trying to make it all about the kickin' jewelry.

What's hard is that I just don't feel like MYSELF. I feel hijacked, and I am not convinced that any sized fancy wardrobe could surmount that!
