Debbie Phelps Talks About Mothering the Moment's Most Awesome Human on the Planet

In the stands Debbie Phelps is the picture of enthusiastic swim team mom. She high-fives strangers, she covers her mouth, her wide eyes absorbing the history-making scenes below. Sometimes she passes out. But when talking about her son, the history-making, greatest athlete on the planet son, Michael Phelps, she means business - especially when discussing the opportunities, pitfalls, and famewhores now flocking his way.

I spoke with her this afternoon about her son, about raising an Olympian, a child with ADHD, a child who was taunted by bullies and then went on to live one of the most redeeming stories in the history of human accomplishment. She did all of this as a single mother on a limited principal's income.

She talks about this and she answered my pointed question as to whether or not Michael Phelps has a girlfriend. Read her answer in my 10 am (CST) post tomorrow.
