New Pop in the house

Weeds You know, when I first came across MamaPop I assumed it was a parenting site. Look at that, I thought. A place where Mamas and Pops can snark off about important parenting issues, like homeschooling and diarrhea.

Yeah, no.

Instead, it is another wave in the ever-advancing riptides of Pop Culture Analysis. A wave that will knock you off your feet, flip you over, and leave you supine on the beach, gasping for air and covered in dead jellyfish. As the only Pop contributing to a femcentric site like this one, I want you to know I take my role very seriously. I'm new here among proud, sassy mamas who strive to give this morass of dreck known as "popular culture" the ass-whooping is so often deserves. So therefore, when I tell you that I've just begun watching "Weeds" as part of my new Netflix membership, I want to call attention to Mary Louise Parker as a pioneer in a business that so rarely creates layered female roles.

Weeds

I want to respect the woman, the actress, who brings such complexity to a feminist antihero such as Nancy Botwin. She's ballsy, she's vulnerable. She's fiercely protective of her kids, she desperately misses her dead husband. She's navigating her fucked-up family through a tortuous life in a lifeless community of material, self-centered, homogeneous douchebags.

It is this sense of nuance that truly sets her apart. It is not that gorgeous alabaster backside, which looks even more elegant swaddled in a pair of distressed Levi's. It is not those come-hither eyes. Absolutely not those lips, which curl so seductively around the straws of her ubiquitous iced coffees. It is not those languid contours that inspire a man to walk ten miles just to stand in her garbage.

No.

Sure, MLP has a personal life that resembles the first 20 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan," and some friends who've met her have found her "prickly." The fact is, she plays a tough broad on a great show, and I want you all to know I am a great fan of her work. Also, her buttocks.

You gotta love that Photoshop!

Hey. I'm one of those "proud, sassy mamas" here and I homeschool. It can be a snarky subject and it's cooler than a discussion about leaky shit. It's also embedded into pop-culture, but not in the way many would think.

In addition, I love "Weeds" and think Mary Louise Parker is a MILF.

daisybones

Holy crap that is sexy! My friend (who has seen the show; I haven't yet) was telling me how hot Mary Louise Parker is and I was sort of incredulous: "She's cute, but sexy? Not really sexy."

I stand so fucking corrected. *off to queue up Weeds on Netflix*

Suzy Q

I've been in love with MLP since "Boys on the Side." She has a smile that could melt popsicles.

That I get to see her every week on this weed-wacky show is fabulous!

I cannot get the theme from "Weeds" out of my head. I sing it to myself as I drive to Target.

I watched the first two seasons of Weeds in 3 days on Netflix's Instant Viewing page and then I had to buy the 3rd season on iTunes and watch it in an orgy of suburban malaise one afternoon. And then I went to Target again.

MLP's Nancy Botwin is the most charismatic character I've seen in a long time. And yes, totally smokin' in Levis.

sweetney

y'all get off *my* MLP. she's teh awesome.

shoveled down the first two seasons of weeds on DVD rapidly, the rest via Showtime -- which we subscribed to *just* for that purpose.

addicted? perhaps.

Lindsay

My next disc of Weeds is arriving today from Netflix- Squee! Love that show. And MLP- gosh. Her skin! Her curves! Oh, to be an alabaster goddess...

Maria

Weeds totally nukes the fridge in the latest season, but Nancy Botwin continues to amuse and arouse me to no end. How can she be that cute? It's maddening.

If that were a photo of me, it would be the snake that's photoshopped in! I'm liking season 4 a lot more than 3. "Moses wasn't half the coyote I am." hahahaha! And Silas is hotter than ever. **fans self**

I like mostly MLP's "Boys on the side", it was emazing.I became a big fan. If I was a snake, I would be a lucky guy.

Shamelessly Sassy

I recently started watching Weeds, but after catching up on tons of episodes, I've decided that it is the best show ever. ever. And MLP is fabulous.
