True Blood: Not What I Was Expecting

Don't tell the others, but I ditched the MTV VMAs and the open thread and watched the premier of HBO's new vampire series "True Blood".

Yes, I realize that this is the reason that people have DVRs but: 1) The other MamaPop writers are the reasons I have been so obsessed with vampires lately (I'm only on Eclipse, don't tell me anything yet) and 2) I already told you that MTV was dead to me and 3) True Blood is an Alan Ball project. I love me some Alan Ball and 4) My husband would have made fun of me if I told him I wanted to watch the VMAs.

So anyway... True Blood.

Being that I am deep into the "Twilight" series, that I was a huge fan of "Six Feet Under" and their were warnings at the beginning for violence, language, nudity and adult situations I was expecting a lot of hot vampire action and dark humor. But it wasn't like that exactly.

"True Blood" takes place in Louisiana. I think the idea of of vampires living the rural deep south is something that I haven't seen before. New Orleans, sure, but not small town bayou. The main character, Sookie is played by Anna Paquin. Sookie is a nice girl who doesn't say bad words and lives with her grandmother. She also works in a bar and is surrounded by foul-mouthed hooligans.

Also - she can hear people's thoughts.

Note: I hope at some point during this series I can stop seeing her as the feisty kid from "The Piano". It is distracting.

So a vampire walks into a bar...

Trueblood

and our heroine saves him from vampire blood poachers.

I know, it sounds bizarre, but in the True Blood reality vampires have come out of the closet. They want to be out in the world like regular people and thanks to Japanese synthetic blood technology and free enterprise you can now buy this synthetic blood over the counter thus ensuring vampires no longer have to feed on people or animals.

Oh, and drinking the blood of vampires is the new meth. Hence the poachers.

Okay, I'll stop before you feel like you've already seen the episode, but I recommend checking it out. It isn't what I was expecting, but in a good way.
